It's quiet and no one is around. Sometimes it's because you aren't around the person that you love because they had to leave.

I also resist going to bed. I feel a bit sad at night. I have analyzed this for myself, and I think its because another day is over. You may not have accomplished anything that you hoped, time passing, etc. Notice how on super happy productive days, the evening depression is less?
If you read at night, a good book gives you something to look forward to.

I went through the exact same thing once and someone in the medical field told me this......that at night the end of the day is the most depressing period of that day. Its the end of that day and we arent sure about tomorrow. I do wish you the best of luck!!!!

I don't know why but I do know what it's called. At least, I think I know what it's called. "Sundown Syndrome"
You need to find someone to talk to, to really unload on, if this doesn't help get professional help.
My first choice as a Christian would be to get a good Christian friend to listen to me. If you don't have one or don't know Christ, then finding Christ might just cure your depression.

You are reliving the childhood separation-anxiety you suffered at bedtime.
You perceived that your parents were withholding their love and affection when they forced you to stay in bed when you wanted to be with them.
If you can forgive 'em for that, you will be cured.
I have just saved you years of expensive psychoanalysis.

because it is a time of solitary and quietness where you are left with just yourself and your thoughts and sometimes your thoughts become too profound to deal with.
