My dog just broke his duclaw. I have to wait until tomorrow to get him into the vet's office since they are closed during the night. How do I get him to stop licking his wound so that it doesn't get infected?

Try wrapping the leg in gauze and then use this self adhesive tape (can get at drug store or pet supply place no expensive). Wrap it up good, but not too tight. Try to keep dog interested in something else (I would use belly rugs and snuggle time for mine). Another way would be to get one of those plastic collar things that look like a lamp shade, that will keep him from being able to lick the wound. Good luck.........

Bitter Apple Spray. It is a medicated formula you spray onto wounds. Dogs (and cats) hate the taste as it is a sour bitter taste. Thus stopping the licking etc. Or go back to the vets and ask for a larger Elizabethan collar.

Go to a 24 hour walmart and get one of those "Elizabethan" collars. Your dog will not be able to reach the wound to lick it. Remember to keep the wound clean!!!!

Good Luck!

If you live near a drug store that is open, pick up a bit of bandage material and wrap the area, but no too tightly. You can also pick up something like Bitter Apple at a pet store and spray it around the nail area. It tastes bad. Don't spray it on the broken claw. Maybe spray it on a cotton ball and dab it around the claw.

Don't make him stop. It is his way of not letting it get infected. A dog licking his wounds is good.

A vet told me a long time ago, after I'd gotten one of my dogs spayed, to put some deodorant around the outside of the stitches. If you can do that without getting it into the sore, maybe bandage it then put some deodorant around that may work?

you should put neosporin even thuogh neosporin is for people but for animals too and then but a bandage not a regular bandaid a bandage tha is like cloth that could stretch!i mean i did that to my dog and it did not lick it1 you should put duck tape to tape the bandage still and when it tries to take the bandage off say no dont take it off and if it douesnt listen then hit the dog really softly!if you want ot keep it clean then let the dog do it cause dogs saliva is acualy a healing machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can't and you DON'T want to. Your' dogs saliva has an anti-bacterial agent in it that promotes healing. Unlike human saliva, that is a virtual petry dish of all manner of germs and icky stuff, a dogs saliva is almost sterile !

Don't stop him. His constant licking will keep it clean and help it heal.
