From my experience, I don't think they are allowed to receive anything but letters while in boot camp.

safe bet, if it needs batteries, dont send it, until he is of sufficient phase during AIT. You cant really have a whole lot during boot camp, but in AIT he can have a lot more, but if he is phase 4 he will have to have it locked up until he has the privelege of having it.
maxim would be a no-go for basic, the only reading materials allowed were our "smart-books" (soldiers manual) and our religious material (bible).
Wait till he is in AIT. Right now in basic he needs to know people are supporting him and behind him, and have the promise of good shiite when he finally makes it to AIT.
If you want him to be in good shape. If he is in army boot camp, have lots of "marine" logos on the envelope. if marine boot camp, put a lot of "air force" logos on it. write "aim high" on the back or "into the blue". You get the idea. a guy in my basic had that happen to him, it was soooo funny. They made him run around the barracks a lot.

Im not gonna bother to try for best answer because John Q above me already said it.
What little free time they will get will be used up just in trying to write a letter home.
Ask him/her what they need and can have, then send that.
Larger Bulk items (Like enough candy for the whole company) can be locked up in the Company Commanders office and the company will be allowed to have it during appropriate times.
In my day a training company was about 80 men.

If you send him cookies, candy, or other food items, send him enough for all of his buddies or else don't send him anything.
A newsy letter from you, with photos of the two of you, or photos of friends and the hometown, would be appreciated. Maybe you can send some sort of token for a good luck charm.
And send him thanks on behalf of all patriotic Americans
He does not have time to read books, play video games, or watch movies.
He is now in a whole different world that you won't understand until you are there yourself.

You can send them care packages, just don't make it bulky because if he's in the field when he gets it, he has to carry it around with him. Plus, in some cases the drill sgts and such will go through th stuff first, so I reccomend TONS of letters with non nude photos. You don't want anything personal to get into the "wrong" hands. GOOD LUCK

Don't send anything like that, he'll likely get his *** chewed. When my husband, then boyfriend, was at bootcamp I sent him a birthday card and on the outside of the envelope wrote "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" Later on I found out that he got yelled at, in a making fun of kind of way. He isn't scarred or anything like that, but they aren't allowed to bring that kind of stuff, so don't bother sending it, there's no time to look at Eva in boot anyway.

Nope. Any packages you send he will have to open in front of the RDC's (company commanders) and anything... ANYTHING good will be confinscated. You can send him a page or two at a time in a letter format, they don't mess with letters.

NO, Letters from home that's it. So, if you want ot give him something hot to look at include a naked picture of your self so he can beat off to you.. That is like gold to a guy in basic training. And It will mean alot to him.
