Perhaps worship is the wrong word (at least it is for me).
I think God wants what is best for us. And what is best for us is to live a life in which we love others, show forgiveness, exhibit compassion.
But to do so requires following God's laws. I don't mean this in a rigid sense. The Buddha said a person had absolutely no chance at achieving enlightenment unless they adhered to a strict moral code.
So, when I choose to love God with all my heart, I put His laws and wishes before everything else. And by doing so, it makes it easier to love others as much as I (hopefully) love myself.
I hope I am making sense. Anyway, I agree with what you are essentially saying...God does not need our "worship", but we need Him.
peace

La Belle B,
"Why does God want us to worship him?"
He said that it pleased Him. And He's worthy of it.
"That's a little egotistical don't you think."
Actually, It would be awful of me not to. He's done so much for me. I guess you haven't noticed Him doing much for you? Maybe it's your attitude.
"I mean, I could be the nicest person in the world, give to the poor and love children, yet if I don't believe in him, I'm doomed."
If you don't feel that He's calling you, it's mutual. He does not want everyone.
"That doesn't seem very noble to me."
It's not up to you to place nobility. He decides who He exalts. Once again, attitude.
"Shouldn't S/He just be happy if we're good people?"
He has said over and over again, we are not capable of being good. There is no one good, not one.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
If you don't want that, that's fine. It's not stopping me.

God gave us a choice, ever since we were able to make choices. If you choose to live a normal life and not be part of his family, then He is sad, but if you continue to ignore Him, and just don't want anything to do with Him, then He is terribly hurt, and there might be a place in The Burning Lake Of Fire for you. He would like it because, We started out in his possesion. When the world began, he made us. Until the bad apple spoiled the bunch. If you believe that there is a God, and respect him, and give to the poor, you might have a chance.

If you do good things for people and it seems they never thank you nor even think of you ... and instead think god things of your sworn enemy ...
Since G-d made you and everything else, and you refuse to even "believe" in Him ...
And He knows that people have the innate need to "worship"; they need to worship Him; if they don't then they will worship either the Enemy or they will worship themselves.
There is nothing wrong with your giving to the poor and loving children ... in fact, those are commendable actions. But being "good people" isn't enough because we can not be good enough; we need the righteousness of G-d. That is not something we can earn, not something we can buy; rather, it is the gift of G-d.

You ask two different questions. Worship is an outlay of our devition and love for Him. Something that comes from a relationship with Him, and is a natural occurance to those that realize what He has done for us.
But being a good person does not necessarrily define you as being Godly. Your definition of good, and the motivation behind it can be two completely different things. That doesn't mean that He doesn't notice your efforts, but that you have no relationship with Him. That is the defining thing.
Doing things because you figure, "just being good" is good enough, is NOT what He wants of us. He wants what good you do, to be born out of your relationship with Him.
The fact that you place a S/He indication on your designation of Him, tells me that you obviously have a lot to learn, and a long ways to go in developing a relationship with Him.

It's not a question of God being "happy." We do not worship God for God. We need to worship God for us. Worship is just the proper response from a creature to the Creator.
You may be a very "good" person but you do not have things straight until you acknowledge God.
And if you do not believe in Him, why would you be worried about it anyway? If there's no God, it makes no difference!

No, its not egotistical for Our Heavenly Father To Ask us to worship Him. It is egotistical for mere humans to refuse Him worship.
God Gives us everything, & Is By Far, Deserving more from us, than just mere worship, & yet, that Is All that He Asks of us.
To Michael L.: I suggest you do a more little research on world religions. You will learn that the God, or gods, of all religions expect the worship of His/or their believers.

No, I don't think it's egotistical of Him to have us worship Him at all... Everything you've ever had the opportunity to think, say, or do are ALL gifts from Him... Your very BE-ing is because He made you and granted you life... You're judging The Infinite Him with your finite mind...
"Good people...?!? None of us are able to redeem ourselves in His eyes... Only by accepting the free gift of salvation made available through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, are you able to be saved... He gave His Son so that you could be with Him forever... Isn't that enough for you...?!?

It's not like God demands it from us. Worshipping or not worshipping him is our own decision. Of course, you must believe in Christ to go to heaven.. Some scripture.. John something, says something like "those who believe in Him will not die but have eternal life".
Also, being a believer doesnt mean you have to do good deeds, of course they couldn't hurt. You simply have to believe and follow his laws. Consequently, simply doing good deeds won't do anything unless you believe in him
I was once an extreme non-believer.. and still am not 100% committed yet, but those are a few very important points i have learned so far.
Hope this helps

Although you can do good deeds all your life they will never get you into heaven. This is because you would still have unrepented sin left in you. The Bible says, "For ALL have sinned and fallen short of God's standards." God has given us a way to please Him and that way is ONLY through His Son Jesus who gave His life to save ours. That's not very egotistical now is it?
