I consider myself a theist because I believe in a single unifyling force that conncts all creation and I choose to call that force God/dess. However, I do not believe that this is a "supernatural entity." I suspect that someday science will identify the thing we now call "God." I believe God loves us in that way we love our own cells. i mean, we want them to keep going, we know they are what we are made of, but we kill 'em by the thousnads - scratching an itch, drinking a few too many at the office Christmas party, or taking antivirals or chemotherapy. Sometimes you sacrifice the few for the sake of the many, y'know?

So am I technically an atheist, since I don't believe in a supernatural prayer-answering, saviour-sending sky-daddy?

And don't bother telling me I'm going to hell. Hell is supernatural and i don't believe in the supernatural. Didn't you read the question??

And for the person who classified this as a rant and was unable to discern what, specifically, the question was:

Am I technically an atheist because I do not believe in a supernatural "God," but rather in something that we perceive as "God"?

Is your god sentient?

It almost sounds like it is. If so, no, you are not an atheist.

A name has been given to what you are describing. It came out of a movement called Process Theology.

You are a Panantheist. God is in all and through all but does not necessarily have a personality like the sky pixie. This is pretty much where I come down.

Your viewpoint just proves that you are too smart to fall for the silly dogma contained in most organized religions. But you are still sensitive enough to the universe to realize that all things are connected on levels that we do not yet understand. Things that are taken for granted as facts today used to be considered acts of God.

No, you're not an atheist. You would probably consider yourself to be a deist. My husband is one too, although I am an atheist. Many of our countries founders, including Thomas Jefferson, were deists, so you are in good company.

Since we have millions and millions of bacteria operating individually inside of our body (i.e. our stomach) to help us live every day, wouldn't it be funny if we were all some sub-unit of some other entity?

Well, atheists don't believe in any god, or as I understand it, anything supernatural at all... so no, I don't think you're an atheist.
