Don't make him sad in the first place.

Those red stains are caused by your dogs' natural tears sitting on the fur/hair and bacteria begins to form. If the area isn't cleaned daily, the redness settles in on the fur and makes it look stained. Keep the fur on the face clipped very short and wipe the eye area daily with an alcohol-free baby wipe or plain damp facecloth. If you miss a day or two, you'll see the redness appear again.
My vet also made a comment to me one day in regards to our poodle's eyes and how they don't have any staining. He asked us if we fed treats and foods with red food dye as an ingredient, which we don't. Surprisingly, this dye can be found in many popular treats and brands. Read your labels and avoid those particular types. If you notice a difference in the amount of tearing/staining, you'll know for sure it was a good suggestion on my vet's part. He says that food dyes also cause discoloration of the skin and mouth of the dog. I can't say for sure, but I tend to agree with him!
Best Wishes

I own a white bichon frise with the same problem!
I found that regular bathing helps, once a weeks and make sure the hair around her eyes is trimmed and not rubbing or falling in her eyes.
I also use tear stain wipes, once or twice a day, you can buy these heap and pet-co and they effectivly over a few weeks dramatically reduce the stain, however you must be dilligent with use and use them every day, it is easier than bathing her , just wipe it on
Also, she might have allergeries, you could consider asking you vet if this is the case in which case and change or food or medication could really turn things around.
good luck

I just keep my Maltese groomed in a "puppy cut" and the stains are not much of a problem. I always use Puppy Shampoo on my dogs so their eyes won't burn (has nothing to do with your problem, just thought I'd share). My Maltese is my very best friend and so dear to my heart! Good luck with yours.

Your two best answers are... clip the hair short and use a light coating of vaseline... it's normal for that breed. In fact, I can't think I've ever seen a Malty without tear stains.

there are a couple things you can do, i would do all of them. There are wipes for dogs that have white coats. they aren't very expensive. Wipe your dog with those. then also when they have the crust in their eyes use a q-tip to get it out. Keep their hair around the eyes cut short as well. this should all help.

I got some tear cleaner for my dog and it works - just have to keep using it. Comes in liquid or wipes. Can get it at local pet supply place and not expensive.

A former dog groomer at my work swears by bottled water (for low mineral content) and 1/2 a tums a day.

Just clip it. Keep the area short and wipe the eye area with just warn water and a cotton ball daily. That will keep it from building up and staining.

I have always heard that sprite actually works. Just put some on a papertowel and gently wipe at the stain, it should come right off.

***LOWER protein content in the FEED!!!!***
"Diamond-eye" DOES work!
Do ***NOT***cut the hair! It ONLY makes it WORSE!!!
Smear a TINY dab of vaseline on the CLEAN DRY area.
All helps...no "cure"!
