Put it in some Clorox diluted about 10 to 1. (10 parts water to 1 part Clorox) Leave it for a couple of hours and it will be as good as it ever was. If you are really paranoid about this, take it to your dentist and ask them to soak it in the disinfecting solution for you.
DO NOT USE ANY FORM OF HEAT STERILIZATION OR DISINFECTION unless you want to pay for a new retainer. No autoclave. No boiling water. No hot dishwasher. ESPECIALLY if you have one of the newer style all clear retainers. Jeez... WHY do people who have no clue about the subject bother to answer and mislead...???

Well, it's very unlikely to have any pathogens that will cause you illness. So you needn't aim for sterilisation unless you're obsessive-compulsive. Do you sterilise your toilet seat every time?
Ordinary dishwashing detergent with water will be fine.
But if you want more, then a 10:1 bleach or Milton's solution for 10 minutes is even "better". Longer is not necessary. This is the Australian Standard for disinfecting dentures.
No heat treatment of any type.

Get some water boiling drop in the retainer and leave it for at least ten minutes. No germ will be left alive.

An Orthodontist might be able to clean it for you if you take it to them, cause cleaning it yourself may damage the retainer if done improperly.

Just brush it with toothpaste. It's not going back into a sterile place.
