Frankly, rather than TV, I am really concerned about the games that are being published, sold, and played by kids. Now they have one on THE GODFATHER. That ought to be delightful, although from what I have heard, that is mild compared to the other even more violent games kids now are subjected to and play. My fear is they will become immune to violence and consider it a "natural" form of entertainment as well as a way of life.

Depends on what they are watching. I don't believe in allowing children to have a tv in their room for that reason. You can't control what they watch. yes they have parental controls, but there are still things that can be difficult to block out. My 3 yr old and my 1 yr old only watch one channel sometimes two. My 3 yr old is speaking some spanish lol because of some shows and has started singing songs. A kid can learn a lot from tv if they are watching the right kinds of things. And if you are watching with them and helping them to understand some of it as well. I do believe that the amount of tv should also depend on age. As long as it doesn't come before homework, affect their bed time, and they get some outside time, it's all good. Course I've learned some things, all kids are different. My brother NEVER wanted to go outside and only wanted to play video games. You cannot change a kid on who they are. Doesn't mean he was any less educated than the rest of us. My mom made sure he was playing educational games and so on. Find out what your kid likes and then incorporate education into that activity in some way no matter what it may be. So no, I do not think that watching less tv will help kids to learn more. As long as they are watching the right kind of things and they get some stimuli other places as well they will be fine. When I watch tv I also write or draw so I'm not just engrossed in the tv. You can also encourage kids to do a puzzle or something along those lines while they are watching tv.

For most of the children the answer would be yes. But there would be rare cases where the child can manage to get the most out of the education while watching TV. But I think if you have the feeling that your children do not study well becouse they are too much in to TV, then you should do something to take them back in to the track. Say may be you can ask them to watch TV only two hours per day.

If they watch T.V. instead of doing their homework then yes, I think they would learn more if they watched less T.V. But as far as having any long term affects on the brain, I don't think so.

I think they would learn BETTER, not necessarily more. A lot of TV is eye candy, and gives them no reason to think problems through... they just wait a few minutes and the answers are there.
Ditto on computers (yep, just like the one I'm using to type this answer).
But if they didn't have the electronic and audio-visual stimulation that comes from electronic gizmos, then they'd have to exercise their brains and stimulate their own creative thinking, which helps in problem solving.
They'd be calmer, thus lending themselves to better attention span and increased ability to listen.
So yes, I think TV does affect their ability to learn.

If children are reading a book instead of watching TV, they will learn more. I don't think it--I know this. I read 200 books and wrote book reports in 2nd grade. I read at least 10 books a week every year after that. My scores were the highest in my school.

well I can tell you from my personel experience. I grew up whatching hours of tv a day. I believe that I am intellegent. But I know a little about alot and not alot about a few things. I also believe that it all depends on the type of programing. I lived in the counrty and all we got was PBS so alot of kid friendly shows. If all a child sees is "medium" and CSI then that is all that they will know. The Television could be a great learning tool if used properly.

Depends on what they are watching. There are some wonderful shows that educate kids, like animal documentries and never discount the power of Sesame Street. The key is "parental guidance".
Kids don't have to be learning every waking moment, there are times they need to tune out too.

It all depends on what you're kids are watching. There are TV. programs that are made just for baby's and toddlers. they have games and puzzles that stimulate the brain. TV is good but in moderation, you want you're kid to be active and to play and interact with other kids as well. This Will help him or her build character and social skills . There are also games out on the market that can help you're baby get smarter." play school" and "leap frog" are the best brand out there.

i think that tv in general is educational - not just educational shows on the discovery channel and animal planet - like stupid stuff like homemakeover or the suite life of zach and cody - it sort of prepares you for the world because you see how people act and how to do little things that nobody really thinks about like plastering wallpaper lol . you learn about the legal system ( law and order) or stupid little facts. I think television is the ultimate entertainment + theres music ON it so theyres no competition. TV keeps you connected because if u dont wath any tv you miss out on all the little jokes or conversations .I watch TV all the time and im really smart like i have the highest GPA i dont think its bad for you unless you watch instead of doing something like homework or chores or sleeping! lol
