Our Dachshund puppy, 9 months old has had surgery Sept. 1, then again today, Sept. 18th, for swallowing foreign objects.. ( tampon first time, then grass and cardboard today) Is there ANY way to train him to not do that?? can't afford any more surgeries! We really love this dog.. I watched him being born, and have a bond with him.. he's a beautiful, longhaired dappled dachshund. Please, any advice would be appreciated! thanks...

yes my lab has had a surgery for eating a bra. the best thing to do is take five min. twice a day and crawl on your hands and knees and get a "dachshund" eye view. remove everything that can or would pose as a future chew toy. just like you would for a baby. crate him when you cant watch him. you can teach him not to when your watching him by scolding him when hes got something hes not suppose to have and then handing him something he can have. then praise him. make sure you have an abundance of chew toys and bones scattered around the house so he always has an appropriate chewing choice. best of luck.

My goodness, i hope those were not the "foreign" objects it had to have surgery for??? All those things I would have expected to pass, especially grass... but maybe it was a big ol piece of cardboard? Anyways, I have to admit, my puppies eat EVERYTHING. and people say crate them when you aren't around to watch them, but i hate doing that. We have tried to keep everything up off the ground, and then our oldest 7 month old started getting things off the counters!! We have had to change that as well. We used to think they ate rocks, but after xrays and nothing blocking his intestines, vet said they probably just like to chew on them and they still bring them in the house all the time. My heart really goes out to you though because surgery is expensive, but i know you want to let your pup have freedom as well! Good luck

This problem is much more common than people realize. I bet we do at least 4-6 surgeries a month at our clinic to remove foreign objects. Also, my Pitt likes to swallow rocks, I have no idea why. But I have to be with him outside at all times, he never goes unsupervised.
You need to crate train him and keep him in his crate whenever you aren't able to watch him. This is for his general safety as well, you never know what they are going to find to get into when left unattended. You would feel awful if he got into something poisonous. The only other option is to take him to a professional trainer and see what they say. I've had really great success with www.barkbusters.com but I have no idea if they are in your area. They use the same basic techniques as the Dog Whisperer.

Grass isn't bad for your pet,so I'm assuming surgery was done for the cardboard? Well I have a 3 month old Maltese and she has the same problem. I spray this thing called "fooey" on everything she likes to mess with and when I catch her going after something, I tell her "no" and she assosciated the taste (has bitter taste) w/me saying no. So she doesn't lick/chew/swallow anything w/that taste bc she knows it's bad? Good luck

Here's a thought... How about keeping a better eye on your pup and puppy proofing your house? The grass and cardboard most likely won't hurt him and the tampon probably would have "passed" with a little trouble. Puppy proofing a home is like child proofing a home! They both "get into things" and it's your responsibility to prevent it.

Your doggy is still a puppy. It will probably chew on stuff it shouldn't (and swallow it) until its around 2yrs. Normally it gets better after that.
My sisters dog once ate a package of bar-b-que sauce from McDonalds whole. Believe it or not, no one even knew and it ended up throwing it up in a ball of grass about a month later.

My dog loves to try and eat ABC gum and other crap on our walks. He is 9 months old. If I catch him about ready to eat something, I squirt him with a squirt gun which he hates and he immediately forgets about the object. It helps when he is running around loose also. If he finds something in the yard to eat and he is to far away for me to catch him, I can squirt him with the gun at about 10 feet away. So far all he has managed to eat is a piece of gum so he never had to have surgery.

I paintings interior the veterinary industry and have myself chipped and considered 1000's of animals chipped via the years. I actual have on no account heard of such issues. the only ingredient i will think of of is the technique used to place the chip in. each and each chip is meant to be insert with a sparkling STERILE needle, so till somebody grew to become into being low-fee and attempting to diminish fee, no issues could have got here approximately. i do no longer think of your grudge here could be with the actual microchip, that is going to be with the vet. it style of feels that an infection has been presented to the positioning. have you ever taken your 2nd cat to a distinctive vet and found out what the priority is formerly leaping to comclusions? No, funds isnt' all that concerns, yet your case is nearly a one in 10 billion. pass to a distinctive vet and discover out what's quite occurring.

Puppy -proof the house!Keep everything, and I mean everything, out of reach! My lab grabs anything that isn't nailed down and carts it off!You have to be really vigilant about keeping things where the pup can't get to them.Get trashcans with lids, too. They love to go trash diving.
