I prefer a slow-baked potato ... 2 hours at 250 degrees. Has a creamier flesh when cooked slow. Poke the potato with a knife a few times. Then rub a teaspoon of shortening on the potato before wrapping in foil.

I do 350 for one hour. Another good recipe is twice baked ranch potatoes. Leme run it down for you.
First, take the potatos, scrub the skins under hot water. Then lightly coat potato in canola oil, and sprinkle entire potato in salt. Doesn't need to be heavily coated. Place in oven and bake on 350 for one hour. Russet potatoes are the best for this. For the rest of this, you will need bacon bits, one pint of sour cream, and a normal size container of ranch dressing. I use Kraft, I don;t find any differences with others. You will also need shredded Cheddar cheese. I use a whole bag, it depends on you. One the hour is up, cut the tops off the potato (the long way) and scoop out the potato, leaving the skin as a sort of container. Mix all of the potato that you scooped in a separate bowl, along with all the ingredients that I mentioned. I don't have the specifics, because I do it to taste. Then once you have mixed everything together real well, pack the potato mixing back into the skins, and back again at 350 for 20 more minutes. At first I thought this was way too much work, but its great! I mean, the best. Just remember, if you're trying to impress friends ( I did this last week) make sure you buy russet potatos. NOTHING ELSE. Hope you like it!

Baked Potatoes 1 large russet potato canola oil kosher salt Heat oven to 350°F & position racks in top & bottom thirds. Wash potato (or potatoes) thoroughly with a stiff brush & cold running water. Dry, then using a standard fork poke 8 to 12 deep holes all over the spud so that moisture can escape during cooking. Place in a bowl & coat lightly with oil. Sprinkle with kosher salt & place potato directly on rack in middle of oven. Place a baking sheet (I put a piece of aluminum foil) on the lower rack to catch any drippings. Bake 1 hour or until skin feels crisp but flesh beneath feels soft. Serve by creating a dotted line from end to end with your fork, then crack the spud open by squeezing the end towards one another. It will pop right open. But watch out, there will be some steam. NOTE: If you're cooking more than 4 potatoes, you'll need to extend the cooking time by up to 15 minutes.

1 large russet potato (If it looks like Mr. Potato Head(r), you've got the right one.)
Canola oil to coat
Kosher salt

Dry, then using a standard fork poke 8 to 12 deep holes all over the spud so that moisture can escape during cooking. Place in a bowl and coat lightly with oil. Make sure you wash your potatoes first. Brush with a little oil place in a preheated 350 degree conventional oven.
Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes, check at the one hour mark, many ovens are of a few degrees.
If you have a convection oven it will take about 45 minutes.
Don't wrap in foil, you will end up with steamed potatoes and the skin turns dark.
Enjoy!

Wash thoroughly, prick with the tines of a fork a few times. Rub with olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt, wrap in foil sheets. Bake at 400 for about an hour.
Ditch the Rice-a-Roni and find a green vegetable even if it's just a bowl of lettuce. You've got way too much carbohydrates going on there.

i like the oven better myself too! I bake mine if they are the large baking potatoes @400 degrees and for 1 hour to 1 hour and 1/2. I also, wrap mine in foil before baking... help to keep them moist. Don't forget to prick the potatoes with a fork! Good luck.

400 degrees Fahrenheit for 45-60 minutes. Depends on the potato skin's thickness, the age of the potato, the type, and how crunchy you want the skin. I go 50 minutes usually for a soft potato inside with slightly tougher skin. Bake too long and it gets hard inside too....

I cook the big baking potatoes for about an hour at 400. You just have to check them, and make sure to poke them. If you forget them (which I did once) they will explode. Of course when I did that, it was after they'd been in for about 3 hours!
