I heard so many stories of people being killed by these apparently sweet animals...could anyone explain why they are so aggressive towards human beings?

The chances of person being killed by a stringray are so small (even smaller than being killed by shark, okay and you have more of a chance to die being attacked by a vending machine than a shark...), and it's just their defense. And the Steve Irwin, was a very unusal case, and it was very sad to lose such a great man. That was a very unusal, usually most harm they do is sting you in the feet or legs, because they feel threatened like some people would try to poke a bear or injure it (yes I know it's a stupid thing to do....) , to show that they can hurt it. They are not being aggressive they are trying to protect themselves.... And by the way only 17 people of been killed because of sting rays.

I think it was 17 people in all of history reported to have been killed by stingrays. They aren't aggressive at all.

Can anyone explain why human beings are too stupid to stay out of their habitats? It isn't like the stingrays are walking into pubs and killing people.

Actually, they are not dangers to man.

After the death of Steve Irwin I read that there have only been 17 Sting Ray deaths recorded - EVER.

Their venom is painful, but not deadly or dangerous. Steve Irwin died from being stabbed in the heart - a total fluke.

To the guy above. Irwin was active in animal conservation. His flashy stuff did a lot of good things to educate a lot of people about animals and the need to protect them. OK, he occaisionally annoyed a few. But, on balance, he was one of the good guys.

Stingrays are the more passive creature in the ocean. They only react when they feel threatened. Only 17 people have died from them ever.

They're only dangerous to psychotic Australian television performers who like to torment animals for money.

I've never heard of them really being aggressive......they get stepped on... But anything can be aggressive if it thinks its cornered.
