unfortunately, the rash will have to run it's course-and it will get worse, lasting about 10-14 days.

the reaction was caused by an oil called urushiol that is found in the leaves, roots, and twigs of the oak plant.

your skin will eventually break out into blisters which may ooze.

best thing for treatment is to take a lukewarm bath with an oatmeal bath such as aveeno-this will help relieve the intense itching. do not use hot water b/c it will inflame the rash more.

you can also try apply a cold compress to the area and allow air from a fan to blow over the compress-this will help relieve the itching and dry up the ooze coming from the blisters (if present)

after cooling the rash, apply calamine lotion-this will continue to help relieve the itch and also dry up the blisters.

you can try taking oral benadryl to help relieve the itching as well, especially at night-it will make you sleepy and keep you from waking up itching. take 1-2 of the 25mg tablets every 6 hours but no more than 4 doses in 24 hours. try not to scratch as this will make the itching more intense and can cause infection.

the best thing to relieving the itch is to dry out the blisters-so keep applying the cool compresses, using the fan,and applying the calamine lotion.

hope you feel better!!

OTC Benedryl by mouth and then use the OTC Benedryl spray on your chest--you need to stop the reaction. If that isn't working within 36 hrs, see your doctor!

There is a wash called TECNU. You can get it OTC at any drug store. It works. My husband is allergic to poison oak, and that is all he uses.
