A lot of mental hospitals have been shut down over the last few years. Does this mean that psychiatrists are more proficient these days? Is mental illness on the wane?
Are most of the so-called 'sane' people of this world really sane, or are they just cleverly hiding their madness?

There are less Mental Hospitals but many more teams to support people with Mental Helath issues in the community, afterall just because you have a Mental Illness does not mean you should have to live your days out in an institution. A very small minority of people with Mental Health problems are a danger to others, of those that can be it is a symptom which wanes and a very, very tiny minority need life long inpatient care in special units. The system has changed as have treatments and attitudes and it is all more humane and for the better.
Mental Hospitals were very unfair and scarry places sometimes. The former Mental Hospital in my City has had a wing renamed, which is now offices, in memory of the longest serving female patient there. She went in at15 and died there at 83, all because she got pregnant to a married man! I'm glad things are different!

There are several reasons to explain your statement.
Until some years ago, mentally ill patients were not "socially accepted" reason why family members kept them in institutions. Today is very common for people to eccept and share their mental illness diagnosis with other people.
Health care cost is too high to keep patients in a mental institution 24/7, so as long as they are not dangerous to society they are free to live anywhere, many of them on the streets.

And third, newer medicines that can be easily taken by mouth, are able to control symptoms such depression, illusions, paranoia, apetite, sleep disorders, violent behavior, etc.

Where I live the acute services in the hospital were closed, but two new units were opened down the road. Compared to 20 years ago, more people who were in hospital now live their lives in the community with the support of the excellent mental health services such as drop-ins, where people can go for support.

Even though a lot of mental hospitals have been shut down, in some hospitals they still have a psychiatric ward for people who need to stay there because they are mad.
People aren't hiding their "madness", they are treating it to get better.
But really I'm just saying what i hear and see in this world.

I think a lot of it is because of better medicine... what would have, in the past, been a very serious disease can now be successfully treated with a prescription.

Also, it might have something to do with the healthcare system. There are probably several contributing factors.

No. It means that the government, for reasons it's keeping to itself, has drastically cut funding to mental health.
