I'm in the market and am having a hard time deciding between the two. I hear both are great cameras. I grown up Cannon but both look good to me.

The 400D is a bit small for my hands, but I would greatly prefer it over the Olympus for two reasons:
* A decent sized viewfinder. This is the most important user interface on a camera, and the viewfinder of the E500 is terrible. The 400D is not the best in the world, but it's much better.
* instant start-up. The E500 takes 1.7 seconds to start up and the 400D is nearly instant. I do a lot of street photography, where reflexes and responsive equipment make a difference. If your shooting style is different, this might not matter.
Someone mentioned a wider selection of digital lenses for Olympus as an advantage for that brand. I personally fail to see the logic behind that reasoning. Canon has a wider selection of lenses - period. In every price segment, and in every (zoom) range.
Others mentioned the extra 2 MP as a real advantage for Canon. The extra 2MP is nice, but no big deal. It won't make any difference up to 8x10 inch prints, and it really won't make much of a difference on a poster size print.
Please note that the E500 body costs $540 and the 400D is $800. That's a pretty big price difference. For a more direct comparison, look at the Canon 350D. The price of the 350D has been slashed to just $630, and all you really give up is 2MP and the automatic dust-removal.
Anyway, between the E500 and the 400D, I'd gladly pay extra for the Canon. Then again, of course I would... I currently use a Nikon D200.

My 2 cents, Canon has the power to be the number 1 mfg of digicams, but it doesn't mean its the best digicam for you. Yes Olympus takes 1.3 seconds to power up, but thats as much time as it takes to get the camera to your eye.

Olympus's sensor cleaning is tested and works, no other sensor cleaning camera has been tested (Sony's has been and it sucks!). Time will tell with Canon's.

Oly's 4/3 lenses are all digital and have always been and not some crossover 35mm lens. Olympus has the largest selection of all digital lenses available on the market (over 25) Canon/Nikon/Pentax have less then 20 ea).

My point is why pay for a canon (extra money and cheap *ss kit lens) when Oly is a better overall system

Konica Minolta neither had the financial streangth or the custumer base in the photographic feild to support their stay. I think sony's DSLR's may also have a very hard time, but they have finances to handle the foray into the DSLR market.

The evolt-500 is a decent camera. However, Canon SLR cameras outperform all others (which is why they dominate the SLR market). Also, the XTi is a 10 megapixel camera where the Evolt is only 8.

canon
Those Olys have a really slow start up time because they clean the sensor everytime they start up.
The Canon does also... but as soon as you touch the shutter button, it lets you take a picture and stops the cleaning. The Canon also turns off the back LCD screen when you put the cam to your eye also saving batteries.
Canon makes much better products, and also the amounts of lenses and other accessories that are available for the Canon is much more than the Oly... and they are verge of getting squeezed out of the DSLR market... and maybe digi-cam also. I don't think they will be around much longer. We have seen a few of the old big-time camera makers die recently, or quit making film cameras... my prediction is that Oly is next as they have not married up with any electronic giant.

1. Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI / 400D 10.1 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera (Silver) KIT...

2. Olympus E-500 DIGITAL SLR CAMERA 8 MG.PXL,2.5"LCD,Inc: EZ-1445

;-D They are both fine cameras. Maybe 10 megapixels is better than 8.

I think the Canon will be better than the Olympus...and you will pay more for that privilege.
But you should wait until the Canon XTi has been thoroughly reviewed and then you should make your decision.

i have an e-500. it's allright, but the sensor and viewfinder are smaller than in the average dslr. i find the size of the viewfinder somewhat annoying and i 'm thinking of upgrading to something better. i would definitely handle one and check it out before you buy.

the rebel xti is probably better....but you can pick up refurbed (like new) e-500 kits on ebay for cheap - about $500.

I like the cannon better personally.
10.1 megapixels will give you shots like you can only dream of.
Reading about it on amazon also tells me alot, including alot of little features that are super sweet.
Believe me, youll be happier with the cannon.
