Recently, I held the door open for a woman, and she turned around and gave me a very nasty look, as if I was doing something wrong. Do you feel that this is demeaning to you? Is it not proper to be a gentleman anymore and hold a door open for a woman?

My very dear Sir, of course I like it when a gentleman holds a door for me. I always thank him for the kindess. It's not demeaning at all, it's respect. I do it for someone older than myself and I see by many of the answers all of us Ladies really do like the gesture. Thank you very much for still being polite enough to hold the door for us Ladies. Blessings.

No, I love it when anyone holds a door open for me. I was taught from a young age that I should hold the door open for people who are my elders, small children who cannot do it themselves, people with packages, women with strollers, etc.

But back to having a man hold the door open. I LOVE IT! It makes me feel like a woman, beautiful, strong, and proud. It is very proper for a man to behave as a gentleman, the lady who got in a huff, was not a lady at all.

Even though my boyfriend and I have been together almost 5 years he still opens my car door (when I don't beat him to it) and makes sure that I am in the car to close my door for me. It is so refreshing in this day and age that men can respect a woman for her accomplishments and still treat her with respect.

Holding the door open for a woman is STILL the proper thing to do. Furthermore, whether you are a man OR a woman it is a common courtesty to hold the door for an older person, people with packages, young women carrying children etc. I wish more people were like you and were considerate and thoughful enough to offer to hold a door. Keep up the good work!!

Holding the door open for anyone shows that you are a gentleman. Today everyone is in to much of a hurry and they do not even notice the person next to them let alone hold a door open. Good for you and keep up the good work. Do not let one woman stop you from being a kind caring person.

As a lady, NO, it is not demeaning!! It is a nice gesture, it shows class and manners when you hold a door open especially for a lady. What is demeaning to me is when some bumble-head doesn't hold it open when people are 4 steps behind him going through the same door!

I am a woman and I open doors for people all the time. Its polite. You are more likely to get a nasty look from me for not opening the door or letting it slam in my face.

Good for you...that girl is crazy, i will never feel insulted when a man holds the door open for me, that's very nice...it means he is a gentleman. Keep doing it, the rest of the civilized women will appreciate it.

Like to tell you old school shold never fade out. I am a woman in all aspects of the word , I respect a man who is considerate enough to hold, or open a door for me ,it lets me know he was raised properly ,and had a mom who was a lady. Only thing that men like that are a dying breed . and what can be said of our youth today , It has no concept of what it is to be (gentlemanly).. keep trying .maybe I, might one day be the fortunate one, for whom you hold the door open, for and I WILL SAY THANK YOU SIR.

I'm a feminist, and I like it when ANYONE is courteous to me and holds a door open, especially if my arms are full! So a thank-you is always in order. I'll also grab doors for males, no sweat.

Whoever gets to a door first can hold it, regardless of gender; it's _simple courtesy_ and doing nice things for other people---in this world, we can rather use more of that!

Don't let this woman ruin your day. There are differences between
"women" and "ladies". If you ever see her again, you can still be a gentleman and hold the door for her. Smile when you do, and say something nice to her about herself. Your actions will either make her your friend or else make her so angry that her day will be ruined. It's win/win for you.
