My crust is too crummy. If I melt more butter will it make it more solid? I would like them to come out of the pan without falling apart.

Yes my belated Grandmother use to make these things called "Date Nut Bars" and they were so good.

I am looking at the crust situation I'll come back in a bit with my opinion on that. But meanwhile you might try this recipe.
Date Nut Chewies
It takes four ingredients.
1 can eagle brand milk
1 bag soft flaked coconut
1 cup toasted chopped pecans
1 box chopped dates. Mix all that together, drop heaping tablespoon fulls onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake 375 till brown, only about 8 minutes or so. So simple sooooo chewy gooey goood, they'll ask you to make em.

Are you melting your butter, because it suppose to be softened like room temp, not melted. Try that in a handful if it's still not right try another handful with a tad more butter. That experiment might tell you if it is the amount of butter or not. You might even get some butter flavored shortening (Crisco). Adjust your recipe till the mix is crumble, and press firmly into the bottom of the pan.
Make sure you you using all purpose flour.
I don't know if this is the advise you needed but I tried. That sounds really good I may have to try to make some this week.

Yes my gran makes them but calls them date slices.
We all love them but hate dates. Think it must be all the sugar in it.
