My friend has a mixed toy breed dog and I've got a pommie. They are both small little things and had their first date yesterday. My dog is a horny little guy, but it seems he doesn't know where and how he needs to be successful to make a few babies. This is a nature thing, isn't it? He'll figure it out, right? Also how will I know he's been successful. Thanks everyone!

Thanks for all your responses, so far! Here are a few more details...We have many people lined up for the puppies, so they will all have loving homes to go to. I have always had pure breeds (now I've got my crazy pommie and a beautiful mellow Shih Tzu. I grew up with Huskeys). The girl is in heat and we have brought them over to my house (the male dogs house). Although she is not a pure breed, she has many similarities to the pommie and she has the best temperment. I'm overseas now and people here a great with dogs. If they are not able to care for a dog, they will find a good and loving home for it. We are not going to sell any of the dogs.

Ditto to what Dane Lover said.
Instead of worrying about how to get two dogs to breed, think of the possible consequences. .
Because you said that both dogs are small, complications can arise during pregnancy and birthing, and your friend may end up losing both the dog and her puppies.
Does she have the money to pay for her dog to have a C-section if she needs one? Can she afford to raise a litter of pups should the pups live?
What is she planing on doing with the puppies? She won't be able to sell them, especially if they haven't gone though the proper health testing.
If she loses the mother during the birth process, is she willing to hand raise and feed new born pups every two hours? She also will have to help them to go to the bathroom, since this is something he mother does. Newborn pups cannot eliminate waste on their own.
Think about all these things before you try to throw two mixed breed dogs together. There are already way too many unwanted dogs at pounds and shelters across the country. Please don't bring anymore into the world
PLEASE tell her that she should have her dog spayed. It will be healthier for the dog and lower her risk to certain types of cancer as well.

My lord. I don't care how wonderful your dog's temperament is or that he has the many of the similarities of a purebred.
Did you not read about the RISKS involved. A dog ... any dog ... should not be bread before she is two years of age. It takes that long for them to mature. Dogs also need to go through genetic testing BEFORE being bred. Just because both dogs appear healthy now, doesn't not mean that something will not develop six months or a year or two from now.
Don't come crying to anyone here when complications arise or the dog has to have a C-section , which is quite common for small breeds.
Poms are know to have a variety of heath problems:
There are some health problems that occur commonly in the breed, and many of them have to do with the dog's tiny stature. Like other very small breeds, Pomeranians are prone to tracheal collapse, trick knees and hydrocephalus (or "water on the brain.") Pomeranians are also genetically predisposed to retained testicles, sex hormone imbalance, and significant heart defects.

A female dog in heat will chew through sheet-rock - fencing whatever to get to a male when she is in heat. Any local males will find their way to her yard just by scent. When she is ready she will breed. But why create more dogs - are their people just lined up to take a small mixed breed dog into their home? And if so maybe they should try the local pound.

Just what we need, more mutts, there aren't nearly enough to go around.
The actual breeding is the EASY part, it gets much harder. Perhaps if you do not know the basics you shouldn't be breeding. Are you prepared for the behavior changes in your male like marking and aggression?

Do NOT breed mixes!!!! Think before you do an irresponsible breeding. Dogs should NOT be bred unless they have impeccable pedigrees, great temperaments, have something to add to the breed, have passed all health tests (not just a simple vet exam), there are many, many homeless mixes in shelters and rescues, many who will never get a home, many who will be euthanised. It is totally irresponsible to delibrately breed mixes or illbred purebreds. Also toy/small breeds are very prone to pregnancy complications, whelping complications, stillbirths, birth defects, emergency c-sections, etc. Do the responsible thing have your male neutered and get your friend to get his female spayed. The dogs will be happier and healthier for it. No risks of reproductive cancers, mammary cancers, pyrometria just ot nmae a few very serious often fatal issues.

Very cute ...
WHAT DO YOU INTEND TO DO WITH THE PUPPIES?
You can't sell them for much ... they're mixed breed.
The pound doesn't need any more puppies that you can't find homes for!

Nothing is going to happen if she's not in heat. And its gonna be tough if she's more dominent than he.
