An example that was given to me was: You have three people talking, one says I got a brand new car last week, the second says cool, I got one like that yesterday, the third one says my muffler fell off today, the second one responds and says oh, that happened to me a month ago. They say I am the second person in the exchange.

I wish I could help, but I don't even understand the question. What I think you mean is that when you start talking to someone.. you agree with them a lot. That is really annoying.. there are a million different reasons why you could be doing it. You probably won't take this advice because nobody on this damn site ever takes me seriously but you should probably see a therapist, if this is causing a problem with forming new relationships, etc.

I am soo in the same boat as you,, I find myself always being able to relate a personal story to just about any topic,, just cuz I have super crazy personal experiences and life stories,, seriously,,

it really sucks becuase like whenI have been in the mental hospital I get so wrapped up in everyone else,, cuz I can relate to where they are or what they are feeling I rarely ever focus on me.. =o)

I wish I knew how to help you,, maybe you and I should IM sometime and share experiences,, LOL then niether one of us would feel so out of place!!!

It may be codependency depending on how it surfaces and when. CoDA (codependents anonymus) may be able to help.

Codependency is "characterized by living through or for another, attempts to control others, blaming others, a sense of victimization, attempts to "fix" others, and intense anxiety around intimacy."

That definition is kind of complicated, I think of codependency and never having an opinion that truly yours (ie if you are asked where you want to go to dinner but you are afraid of answering incorrectly) not knowing how you feel, if someone asks "how are you?" and you say, "my partner and I are fine". Things like that are signs of codependency. To me its feeling as though you do not exist in the absence of others and that your feelings are less important than others.

But I'm not here to diagnose and I may be way off base. Good luck.
