what is the difference between sacrament and ordinary symbol?

The best I could do was to use the on line dictionary. sacrament in one defined position is as follows: A religious rite similar to a Christian sacrament, as in character or meaning.

A symbol is defined in one position as follows:
Something that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention, especially a material object used to represent something invisible.

A simple view is that both are just the same. However any person who stands by their meaning of a sacrament would be very upset maybe if you stated that such is just a symbol. Thus I must say in answer to your question it all depends on your view and accepted defined positions of these words.

Under sacrament it has all religious organizations beliefs in the word sacrament except for what I did pick, And even this can by a religious organization member say it is symbolism reserved for a religious function because that is how they want to use the words.

Sorry I could not do better but you look them up on the Yahoo reference dictionary on the Yahoo toolbar for yourself.

Have a good day and do smile OK
