It's common sense to test drive a car before you buy it in any state.'

Neither. The concept of taking a car for a test drive is to see how the particular car handles and how you fit in the vehicle. We do a lot of research and shopping on the internet before whittling down our list of prospective cars to a few then test drive the models we are interested in. It isn't necessary to test drive the exact car you want to purchase, if buying a new car, but to test drive one with the same specs (engine size, tire size, etc.). It is a good idea to test drive a used car and to have your own mechanic check it out if buying from a private seller. Dealers are supposed to check out and warranty the mechanics on used cars.

It may be a good idea to test drive a car before you buy, but it is not at all required.

No, not at all. But anyone who buys a car without a test drive probably deserves to get taken for a ride, if you catch my drift! Maybe an exception for a new vehicle but never for a used one!

Don't know for sure but it wouldn't surprise me if it's on the books in California. They have so many unenforceable laws nobody could keep track of them all. Heck, they probably have laws telling people which side of the bed to wake up on.
What you're wondering about is unenforceable. Why would I not be able to order a fleet of cars for my comany by phone? Would I have to test drive them all? Nah, don't think so.

Yes it is a requirement to test drive a car, because you may find something wrong with it if u didn't test drive it.

No, but it is certainly a good idea. When you drive the car off the lot after signing the purchase agreement you own the car and cannot return it unless the dealer allows you to. Its the "no cooling off period".

It just makes sense to test drive a car before you buy it. Unless you want to be stuck with a junker.
