Shouldn't teens have a certain bedtime? I am concerned that my teen is not getting enough sleep. 9 seems too early, but it's nothing to see her up at 11. What time does your teen go to bed on school nights?

Be realistic about this question. Teens need 7-9 hours of sleep per day. So how long does your teen sleep on weekends? If they sleep in until 11 or noon then figure 9 hours. If they are up at 7 or 8 on the weekend, then think 7 may be ok for them.

Now, figure what time they need to get up to get ready for school. If they catch the bus at 7 it is a lot different then you taking your teen to school at 9.

Counting backward....subtract 7-9 hours from the time that they will be getting up. Have to get up at 6 to catch 7am bus then they need to be asleep by 9, 10, or 11 depending on their sleep needs. If they get up at 8 to be to school at 9 then 11, 12 or 1 is ok. Plan on at least 1 hour of wind-down time. In my house it is no TV, video games, phone calls or computer after 9, be in bed by 10. If my son isn't in bed (he is 15) by 10, then wind-down time starts 1/2 hour earlier the next night.

If they seem tired afterschool or they are hard to get up in the morning then they are probably not getting enough sleep and the time needs to be adjusted.

A large study has found a surprisingly strong link between the amount of shut-eye people get and their risk of becoming obese.

Those who got less than four hours of sleep a night were 73 percent more likely to be obese than those who got the recommended seven to nine hours of rest, scientists discovered. Those who averaged five hours of sleep had 50 percent greater risk, and those who got six hours had 23 percent more.

I have a 13 year old and I feel that since she is a teen she should have more responsibility so I let her go to bed at 12:00 sharp but she is in the bed at 11:30 and only can watch tv I make her give me her electronics so she can start getting ready to go to bed I feel this is a good way to get here to go to bed and she is not a morning person at all and I wake her up at 6:35 so she can get ready for school at 8:05 I think that she should not go to bedroom early and not to late

I'm a teen personally and I've learned through experience. I'm usually in bed at 10:00 Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. I go to bed at 9:15 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. On Saturdays, I stay up to midnight.

However, these times vary, depending on how tired I am. Under no circumstances do I stay up to 11:00 every evening. It would kill me! (I wake up at 6:00 for school every morning.)

I would suggest that your daughter has a bed-time for the weekdays. My parents are strict with me about this and so far, I have not "passed out" in high school... :)

im 17 and most nights i get to bed around 11:20
this is because i have a lot of homework and there just arent always enough hours in the day. but, every now and then i take a whole afternoon nap, and get as much sleep as possible on weekends.

It depends a great deal on what time they need to get up. If they are not getting enough sleep but don't want to go to bed, it's probably because the bedroom is too warm, the bed is uncomfortable, or the bedroom air is stuffy. It doesn't help much to lie in bed and not be able to sleep. I know this firsthand.

What ever time is good for them. Everyone is different, therefor, everyone requires different amounts of sleep. Some kids need more sleep, some need less. I guess it all just depends on their grades, and if lack of sleep is keeping them from focusing on thier school work. [If their in school]. Hope this helps! :)

Friday Night: We stay up VERY late cause we can sleep in as late as we want. No school!!
