I smashed my thumb bad over a month ago. (No blood, no broken bone, no purple nail falling off though.) The initial smashing pain didn't go away for over a week, and now I'm still suffering. The pain is different now though--it's now traveling up my thumb and towards my wrist. Could I have caused nerve damage? If so, can a doctor do anything for this or is there something I can do to help the pain eventually leave? It hurts when I try to squeeze a bottle, sew, use my computer mouse or just about anything that requires thumb movement. Anyone else have a similar experience, and if so, what helped you?

There is a good chance you did nerve damage. There is also a chance you did some bone damage so I would go to a doctor and have them x ray it, and send you to a neurologist.

It might, though something like that would usually include the purple nail.

I had a few facial nerves damaged when I got mugged some time ago, and had a spot about the size of a quarter that was just plain numb. Eventually, I got feeling back in that part of my face. Though it did take several months.

I am a bit concerned that your pain is spreading. I think there is a painkiller a doctor can prescribe for this: Several of them are STRONG. Meanwhile, are you sure that there was no hidden injury involved? A physician probably could tell better than I could.

Good luck!

It depends. If it is actually a broken bone (usually when it is swollen), the doc tries to set the thumb in place and a cast is molded over it. If a lot of time passes and the bone hasen't healed itself while your thumb is in the cast, it may require surgery. That would usually mean placing pins, but I don't know if pins can be placed around the thumb. If it is a nerve damage, time, painkillers are given, and physical therapy. I would recommend seeing an actual doc (not a pharmacist or anyone less than a gen. doc) because s/he will probably send you for a CT Scan or MRI to pinpoint the damage.

I did do SOME research on this and i found this.

Although this pain isnt perminent it may last another 2 months. Also you may feel tingles or something close to authritise pain in some parts or the arm or even that part of the body. You will feel it directly coming from ur thumb. Dont sew you will probably lose. Get a diagnostic first.

Sometimes a NEUROMA will develop at the injury site & this is painful (oh boy).
you will need to see an orthopedic surgeon (hand surgeon preferably) to remove that tiny thing & relieve the pain.

Meanwhile you may take Amitryptyline 10 mg at night to ease the pain.
I wish you get well soon.
