My husband, daughter (18 months), and I live in an apartment. I am thinking about adopting an adult cat from Safe Haven. that way it has its shots, is neutered, litterbox trained and we will have an idea of its temperament. Someone said that male cats are more lovey. Is this true? We want a calm, lovey, indoor cat that will be good with our daughter and not an indifferent snob like some cats are. Is one gender more prone to these characteristics than another? Thanks!

ALSO, is there a breed of cat that has less dander, or is there a way to reduce fur and dander? I have slight allergies, but am willing to do what it takes and put up with it, so that our little girl can enjoy having a pet. She LOVES our friends cats and is very sweet and gentle with them.

It is true that males tend to be better lap cats. However, I have cats, both male and female, that are lap cats. And I have a few, again, both male and female, that aren't. It all goes back to individual personality. You may want to try a Siamese. They are known for their affectionate personalities and loyalty to their humans. (In fact, my Siamese is circling my computer chair and "talking" to me as I type!)

Cats, like any pet, develop their personalities to match their humans. If they are ignored, they become indifferent snobs. If they are loved, cherished and well understood, they will be more loyal and loving to you than even a dog could be.

As for mild allergies, I've found that if you bathe a cat once a week and vaccuum the rugs, you'll be fine. Anti-allergy medications also work wonders! Best of luck to you on finding a wonderful cat!

In total over the last 29 years I have had 5 Females and 2 Males-
It's the personality of the cat, the best three cats that I have had were 2 females and a male. It is the cats personality that matters not the gender. Good Luck.

I have a female cat that is the SWEETEST angel...and I used to think the males were supposed to be more this way. I think it depends on the individual cat. I think Orange cats seem to be more mellow generally (IMHO).

As for allergies, it is the saliva on the cat that actually causes allergies, from what I recall. If allergies are REALLY a problem, and meds are not helping, try allergy shots! They work wonders.

Also, feeding your cat a high-quality diet will help a lot in keeping the shedding down.

Best of Luck...

I have a great preference for the male cat. That said, I have three males and three females and I love each of them dearly. So there you are.

It is so wise of you to get an adult cat. I have worked for hours trying to convince families with very young children not to get a kitten! You are choosing an adult for all the right reasons and your little girl will love your kitty. Let the cat sleep on her bed and be her special friend.

I suggest getting a female cat that has short hair. Females tend to be more loving and affectionate towards owners. Male cats can sometimes get a temperment towards other males in the house (even human males) and have a tendency to protect thier females.

It's always best to get two cats that way they play with each other instead of the furniture. As far as male or female, you should get cats based on personality not gender.
Long haired cats shed a ton. When I got my current cats we weren't planing on getting a black cat (last cat to die was a black cat) or a long haired cat. We got a cute purring Grey long haired cat and a play full black cat.

Long-haired cats don't bother people with pet dander allergies as much as short haired cats do.

I would get a male cat and have him neutered, that way he will not spray the house and it will not be as expensive to take him to the vet to do it .
