Content. Oatmeal is made only from oats. Porridge, is made from various grains, or a mix of grain, including oats. Popular choices include, Barley, Oats, and Bulgar to name a few. Oatmeal is generally served as a breakfast dish and sweetened to taste. Porridge is a basic meal that can be served at anytime and tends to be seasoned more for a savory flavor.

Oatmeal is a kind of porridge. It's better to call oatmeal porridge. Small children who are familiar with Goldilocks and the Three Bears are more likely to eat something called porridge than something called oatmeal.

From what I could find out from various sources too numerous to name...LOL we in America call oatmeal just plain oatmeal whereas in Great Britain it is called porridge or oatmeal porridge...in other words we chose the first word for it and in Britain they chose the second. In essence it is one in the same just a difference of word usage this side of the pond to the other.

Porrige is thinner and more watery, oatmeal is made out of oats and thicker.

porridge and oatmeal are both dishes. porridge is general while oatmeal is specific. porridge could be rice boiled in water until rice is soft and you have a thick soup in which case it is called rice porridge, or oats added with hot water or boiled in hot water until thick in which case it is called oatmeal or oatmeal porridge.
