to a month has been diagnosed with anemia. Possibly due to severe nosebleeds. His hemogloban level has dropped to 8 or 9 .He has been running a fever on and off , along bouts of dirreah. We have taken him to the emergency room a couple of times in the past month , besides trips to the Doctor. He was supposed to be admitted ,because his hemagloban level was low ,but he was sent home. The doctor at the hospital prescribed ferrous sulfate for him to take, but told me to wait 2 days ,because he was diagnosed with an infection ,but they can 't say what kind, because they don't know what type of infection it is .Finally , after a month ,a smear test has been done with 4 different vials , so they can finally see what type of infection it is before they can prescribe him something. In the interim of things ,my child has lost atotal of 24 pounds, of which he has gained a pound and half , since he has started to eat again. Some of the symptoms have subsided , We NEED HELP! PLEASE !

I agree that this is a situation best dealt with by an experienced physician, perhaps a pediatric hematologist who specializes in blood disorders. The emergency room staff are different every time you go and can't provide the continuity of care needed, and the general practitioner/family doctor can't provide the specialized care that your child appears to need at this time. Please request a referral as soon as possible. Insist on it if need be. Request copies of all laboratory tests previously done for your records and take a copy of this package with you to your appointment with the specialist. I'm not a physician, but believe that your specialist will need to rule out inherited bleeding disorders (like hemophilia), inherited blood disorders that contribute to anemia, and, yes, rule out malignant conditions, in addition to other things. This will require thorough blood testing, physican examination, and interpretation. If you are near an academic hospital affiliated with a university and specializing in pediatric medicine, then I'd suggest you request a referral there as soon as possible. That way, if there are other body systems involved (like his immune system or nutriitonal/digestive system), there are colleagues in the same center who can be consulted, and brought in quickly. Hope that his situation improves soon, and that you are provided with the answers you need.

You need a diagnosis, not random advice. You need a good doctor who can look into causes, make a diagnosis and treat the cause. If it is an infection, treat the infection and the symptoms should resolve. You need to educate yourself, so you can be sure if your doctor is up to this. If not, find a specialist. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor for a referral.

I provided a link for pediatric anemia.

well to put on some wieght have a malt a day for a while. but sounds like they need to come up with some meds for him. I'd stay on that for sure. They need to check the red blood cells. When i had cemo thats what they watch for anemia. Peanuts also has a lot of protien thats also good and not hard for any kid to eat. I ate a lot of them because i didnt really feel like eating but you can like much on those all day and they are good for you until you get back to eating again

Your child definitely needs iron. They may have said no iron for a while because some antibiotics are ineffective with iron.

Your child also needs to eat and regain some weight. Listen to your doctor about what antibiotic and when to take the iron shots. I had this problem in college. He may end up with B-12 shots. If his iron gets much lower, they may recommend a transfusion.

Why was he sent home when he was that sick? I would think they would take him for observation!

He has started eating again, and that's good. You may want to talk to a different doctor. Or a different hospital altogether.

Good luck to your son!

go to a different doctor and a different doctor and on and on until you get an answer and/or go to the ER and make them keep him and tell you answers - sometimes you have to be a witch and stomp your feet.

IN MY OPINION YOU CHILD NEED TO BE CHECKED FOR HOOK WORMS AND ULCERATIVE COLITIS. iF HE DRINKS FAUCET WATER I WOULD TRY BOTTLED WATER, SOME DISEASES CAN HINDER THE PROPER MICROBES IN THE DIGESTIVE TRACT THAT WILL ALLOW NUMEROUS MICROBES IN PLAIN WATER(AND SOME FOODS)TO MULTIPLY UNCHECKED. YOUR CHILD COULD BE LOOSING BLOOD IN THE STOOL WITHOUT IT BEING NOTICE. BLOOD IN THE STOOL IS DARK BROWN. IF THIS WERE MY CHILD I WOULD WANT A LOWER AND UPPER GI RUN. HAVING HIM EAT HIGH PROTEIN CAN POSSIBLY INCREASE HIS HEMOGLOBIN.
