AR 670-1 does not allow for women to go skin tight.
(3) Female haircuts will conform to the following standards.
(a) Females will ensure their hair is neatly groomed, that the length and bulk of the hair are not excessive, and that the hair does not present a ragged, unkempt, or extreme appearance. Likewise, trendy styles that result in shaved portions of the scalp (other than the neckline) or designs cut into the hair are prohibited. Females may wear braids and cornrows as long as the braided style is conservative, the braids and cornrows lie snugly on the head, and any hairholding devices comply with the standards in 1–8a(3)(d) below. dreadlocks (unkempt, twisted, matted individual parts of hair) are prohibited in uniform or in civilian clothes on duty. Hair will not fall over the eyebrows or extend below the bottom edge of the collar at any time during normal activity or when standing in formation. Long hair that falls naturally below the bottom edge of the collar, to include braids, will be neatly and inconspicuously fastened or pinned, so no free-hanging hair is visible.
Here is the Regulation for the Army. Look at Chapter 1-8 (page 3 of the manual, page 26 in Adobe) .a (3) (a)

you have a choice, you can cut it, which will be to military standars which is pretty short since the hair cannot touch the collar. So put on a men's collared tailord shirt and above the collar is how short you should expect your hair. You can shave your head, though for women it is not required. If you do not want to cut your hair, you will be expected to put it up in a way that your hat fits and it doesn't touch the collar. French braiding will take too mcuh time, if you haven't gone through basic yet. However, if you've done all your training and you're just in the military now, you can get up as early as you want to make youself look presentable. Just be reasonable. GOOD LUCK

The only thing is it has to be kept up above the collar. Most females I was at boot camp with that had long hair did a sock bun. It is really easy and they usually show you at basic how to do this. And as for the GI Jane haircut, that is really not within regulation for females. It is considered eccentric! A lot of people do the french braid, but you have to make sure you are quick at it. You don't have a lot of time to get ready. Sock buns are usually the easiest way. Ponytail, thread ponytail threw sock, spread hair over sock, wrap ends around sock, secure with rubber bands. It looks very professional when done correctly.

Regs for women are that the hair may not go below the collar. You can put your hair up in a bun and be just fine while on duty. Think Col Macensy on JAG... she's on the left: http://www.jagcorner.nl/stemcentrum/JAG_logo2.jpg

I remember a gal I was with at Fort Greely she had hair to the middle of her back. But she would twist the hell out of it with alot of pin to get it in that bun, or under that hat. There a little more give now then there was back then.

Thank you, sweet girl for joining the military. Keep as much as you can get away with. If that's not much, consider donating your locks to a worthwhile charity, name of which I'm uncertain.

You do not *have* to cut it at all. But, they don't allow any kinds of bands in boot, so if you can't keep it up with pins (and do it in about 2 minutes) you're going to have trouble.

leave it they will cut it when you get to boot to meet regs... If you cut it below regs(higher then you need) I have seen the base barbers shave the heads of women and men who thought they where going to be spared... Good luck and Thank you for your service.

My hair was down to the middle of my back. It was actually easier to take care of.
