The same basic principles apply, positive reinforcement whenever possible, immediate and physical negative reinforcement when neccessary, fairness, and consistency. It's not hard, and every dog owner I know understands these ideas intuitively. So why doesn't every parent apply these concepts?

And don't say "because my child is not a dog". I know many dogs smarter than many kids I know.

LOL--you treat children differently than dogs. Children are people. I understand what you are saying though. I think that's what most parents are--inconsistent. Good point!

Because if you discipline your child somebody will call the police on you. It happens all the time.

Because my dog cant shout, stomp her feet, slam doors or argue with me. The kids can.

It seems to me that most parents want to be their child's friend and their pets master.

Because the dog can't talk back.
Because the dog takes to discipline because he wants to please his master.
Children don't have masters.

it's legal to spank your dog...
not legal, or PC to spank your child.
and,
pets want to please... kids want to BE pleased.
