If the Pope were an insignificant peon with no power, no-one would bother with this. But his words regularly set armies (literal or figurative) in motion, often to do good, but often to do evil as well, and so they are by no stretch of the imagination "just words".
As for your attempt at reasoning below the question, no. That's a pretty transparent piece of dishonesty on your part.

Sticks and Stones can break my bones, but words will never harm me. No matter what was said, it's no reason to kill anyone . They break one Commandment. Thou Shalt Not Kill !! Good grief, we all have to be strong enough to accept what people say. I don't like to be called a cracker, or an infidel, but what can I do, except wipe the tears away. I would never think killing anyone. Sometimes the truth hurts. I am a cracker at times and I don't know what a true infidel is, So I just ask God to help me and give me extra strength to endure.
Even if it is a lie, good grief, let it pass by. PEACE ON EARTH, GOOD WILL TWORDS ALL MEN.

If someone said they intended to kill me, and I believed them and though they had the ability. I think that would be a reason.
Oh ya, that is what is being said by our enemy:

You know, I beleive them and I believe that they may be able to do at least some of what they threaten.
