Is he right or left handed

Like most things there are far more clubs for Righties than Lefties so if he can play either have him play Righty. However Phil Mikelson is right handed but plays lefty and he's the second best player in the world. Unlike other sports there is no real advantage to being a lefty in golf. I would just have him try both and see which one he likes better

I am an X-Teaching and Club Professional. You could take your question to your local club Pro. who is well capable of determining your child's strong side (Left - Right) question. If this is not an option you could take him to your local driving range - Most all have clubs you can borrow to hit balls with - find him a mid-iron 4,5,or 6 in both left and right - make sure the length of the 2 clubs are about the same (within an inch) - Let him fire off a bucket of shots 1/2 L 1/2 R - his own body will give him the answer. Hopefully your school system has a golf program or maybe there is a local Jr. Golf Program for him to attend. Your local Pro. can fit your son to the proper set of clubs. Many Jr. Golfers start with 1/2 sets Example: 3wood 5wood 3-5-7-9 Irons Wedge & Putter. Many discount houses have Jr. 1/2 sets with bag aprox. $129.00 to $199.00 new - Good Luck / Sure beats getting him a drum set. :-) (Don 3rd. Gen. Golf Pro. California)

What is his dominant hand. In other words what hand does he write with...or when playing baseball does he bat right handed or left handed. Buy the clubs relevent to the dominant hand. Golf is a great game but learning the grip and the swing take years of practice to perfect. No one walks up and feels comfortable with a golf grip right away because it is awkward no matter what you do.
Also they do make a special club with a shaped grip to help someone develop a good grip but the club is only for practice.
Good Luck.

Off Handed you can't. Generally most people who write left are left handed, most who write right are right handed. There are many notable exceptions Phil Michelson writes right swings left. I think it was Johnny Miller who said it was better to swing off the wrong side (like Phil). And now for the real answer take him to the golf shop, they will check his swing and tell you what to do. They will do it before you buy so find out then go and buy a used set on EBay or even at most golf store they sell used. Used is fine for a kid to start. They may have to be cut down and re-gripped and in a short time your son will outgrow them. Even a ladies set might be okay to start., Talk to people at the shop you need is not unique.

I hate to say it, cause I got my three year old boy a set of right handed clubs, but if you don't know what hand he is, it might be too early to get him a set. I don't know what hand my son is either, but I think the only sets I saw for three year olds was right-handed. Good luck. Be the club.

Left hand clubs are for Lefty's and right for right.
