try the local animal shelter. anything you get off the internet os probably puppy milled. Also be careful getting a purebred they are usually more tempremental. try getting a mutt, they usually make the best pets.

A cheap puppy WILL cost more in the long run, because a good breeder does not breed cheap puppies. Cheap puppies will have expensive health problems because of poor breeding practices. If you want to be on a first name basis with your vet, go ahead and get a cheap puppy.

You have to understand that it costs more to breed good dogs that will be healthy. Also, a good breeder will usually take the dog back if it turns out to have a major health problem like needing a $2000 operation in order to live (recently happened to a friend of mine). A breeder off the internet simply would not do that. You would be stuck paying the $2000 and your cheap puppy would suddenly get really expensive.

Also, if you cannot afford a properly bred dog, maybe you should reconsider getting a dog at all, because dogs are not cheap to own. There will always be shots to get, heartworm pills, unexpected vet bills, flea and tick repellant, food (cheap food is not good for your dog) and a host of other costs.

I always advocate adoption before buying, so you can probably find a homeless german shepherd for a fraction of the cost of a puppy. Shelters usually have several german shepherds because they get surrendered due to temperament problems. You need to be aware of this before you adopt one (or buy one) so you don't end up supplying the shelters yourself.

There is no such thing as a cheap purebred german shepherd puppy. There is no such thing as a cheap purebred...Period
There are moderatly priced puppies all over America. as well as very expensive ones. remember that you will usually pay more for a puppy than you will for an older dog.
and the better the breeder the more money will need to be spent.
The best breeders will have already given their puppies all their shots, most will have identification either tatooed or injected in the case of micochips and many will offer Guarantees. and or Insurance. All of this costs Money.
Try not to purchase from a puppy mill or pet shop if you can help it. Puppy Mills breed indiscriminatly without regard to character traits. and pet shops often buy from them. although this is not always the case.
Check with your local Dog Club first. they should have a list of members with the breed you desire.
If you are willing to pay the price for a Quality puppy that conforms to the AKC standard then check with their website for links to breeders.
Older dogs sometimes get thrown away and end up in a breed rescue. Rescue Organizations for each breed exist everywhere but they usually have very strict rules as to who they will give a dog to because the volunteers who work with them spend alot of time caring for and training their charges and want them to go to great homes not just good homes.

NOW, Ask yourself, Do you really need a Purebred?
Will a Pound Puppy/Dog do?
Purebreds have been bred for specific purposes.
Shepards being in the Herding Group are herders who have very specific traits. Stamina, Loyalty, Aggression to non family members, Protection of home from strangers.
Is that what you really want? or do you want a Friend and family member who follows you around, will chase the ball you throw
and love you even though you refuse to pick up his poop?
Dogs are wonderful animals who have tons of love to give but can be a great deal of work. Please think carefully about your decision to take an animal who will depend on you for the rest of his life, into your care. and Good Luck to you.

No, and I wouldn't tell you if I did. Most of the dogs that are sold are grown in cruel puppy-mills and bred by stupid people for profit like they're objects, while so many other dogs are out in the streets as strays with no one who'll take them in and take care of them. Who gives a sh!t about their race anyway? None is worthier than any other. Sure some have their talents and all that, but that doesn't make them any worthier of a home, especially when there're so many that need a home and taking them in is free and not supporting a cruel business. You can do some good and save a dog from being put to death in a shelter in your area instead.

Cheap usually means not health tested, and that the breeder bases his breeding on quantity not quality.

You need to look for a breeder that does health testing, has dog certified in some type of dog related field, like agility, schutzhund, etc.

If you are not going to show or do trials, then I suggest getting your dog from a rescue or shelter. Spay or neuter to prevent health problems, roaming, etc.

What about shelter dogs?

I adopted a beautiful black lab/boxer puppy from my local shelter. She'd been returned once to the shelter and has become such an important part of our family.

Don't let a shelter animal die when they are waiting for a loving home. Shelter pets are always grateful, they know what they were rescued from and they will always give unconditional love!
