I have a 5 year old. He is extremely smart when it comes to hands on things...like puzzles and hooking up the dvd player (which he did at 19 months). He is overly active but not hyperactive. He seems to in his own little world sometimes. He won't answer, he runs away, doesn't seem to hear.
I thought it my have been a very mild case of autism. However, I'm betting against that now. Then I thought is was Asperger's syndrome, but again, I'm thinking not.
Does anyone else have these problems with their child? Have they been diagnosed? What was the diagnosis?

Don't ask that here. Most of the people on this site are not doctors or psychologist. Most people on here will just give you a stupid answer.

First you want to go see a genetic counselor, that is the most important thing you can do right now because early intervention makes all the difference in a childs life.
If you suspect autism, you might want to look up something called Fragile X Syndrome. It has autisitc like characteristics, effects mostly boys, and kids with this are good with hand manipulation. Just something to ask genetic counselor about. Good luck with your son.

Sounds like he has adhd....my son was diagnosed with that and he seems to have the same symptoms as my son. Mention that to his doctor,,,they will give you a chart to fill out..or they might wait until he gets in school if hes not in yet..with all questions for his teachers to answer and for you to answer,,then they will make the diagnosis. Just make sure you mention this as soon as possible to his doctor. I cant believe they havent even thought of that.

your son is obviously very smart, don't try to diagnose him in a negative way, instead nurture his intelligence and provide him with stimulating materials--he is very active because he is bored and when you think he is in his own little world--he is just analyzing things. Don't you feel like you can go into your own little world sometimes?

you should take him to be tested. From what you described it does sound alot like somthing on the autism spectrum. Espeshaly as you say he is "extreamly smart" and "in his own little world some times." I myself have aspergers. feel free to contact me if you would like to talk.

see how his writing skills are ... if he gets letters backwards or upside down, he may be dyslexic ... dyslexics tend to have high IQ's and are very spacially minded and artistic however they have great difficulty learning reading, writing and math skills from a text based environment. .. take him to a psychologist for accurate testing to determine what his real problem is

Did he have a hearing screening?
He sounds normal to me, but you could see a doctor.

Have you checked this out with your son's pediatrician? Did he have his 5-year old physical and shots?

Ma'am, with all due respect for your situation I don't think you should be seeking medical advice on here. Sorry if you disagree.
