Birth control pills evoke a variety of hormonal responses within the female body, that tricks the menstrual cycle into not happening, and out of the process from these hormonal responses, physical changes occur. When the female body is impregnated (as the pill makes the body think it is) other hormonal reactions will also happen, and for the safety and health of the birth process, for both the mother (and the "baby"), some of these processes the body will create for this healthy pregnancy, include a few different measures within the body that tend to make women gain weight, as if while they are pregnant, which may include the miracle of the females body during pregnancy (and maybe even when not-you live longer), to desire foods (which may include MORE food-or groups thereof), that which the body senses its balances are lacking (i.e. vitamins, minerals-and many other balances to promote these miraculous benefits/needs, the body demands during pregnancy. Many hormones are involved in this process, so please don't make me list them all. I am just answering your question in a way that will help you better understand in the most complete and informative way. I feel that if you took a multi-vitamin, that this should stave off MOST of the bodys extra craving for food-but realize water retention is still there to promote good metabolism, retention of minerals needed, and electrolytic balance. Also, if you smoke, realize that some of the minerals that may cause this water retention are probably being used to bind to the toxins in the body and pass them, so quit smoking on the pill for THIS reason, and also realize that cancer rates increase when women smoke while on the pill. Have a great day.

Dear Nati
Try asking your Dr for the mini-pill(combined)
The pill works by making your body think you already are pregnant-and you know what that's like- so it's not too surprising if you gain a little:
On the other hand- you will gain a lot more than weight with an unplanned pregnancy!
For a contraceptive method you can be in control of try getting fitted for a cap: it doesn't fill your body up with chemicals 24/7 like the pill does and for safe loving use a condom too.
Remember your body retains fluid around period time so your weight can fluctuate by a few pounds every month.
Go back to your Dr/health clinic and mention your concerns-they can help you choose what's best for you.
Happy lovin to you.

The pill is a hormone and when you take in hormones it can definitely have an effect on your weight. Everyone's different, so not everyone will gain weight. Some pills may have less effect on your weight, so ask your GYN.
Gaining 4lbs in 2 weeks, I would be concerned about a possible pregnancy, especially if you stopped taking the pill for awhile. You might want to investigate that further.

Hi, yeah I put on loads of weight when I went on the pill - I told the family planning nurse about it, but she just said that it only makes you hungry, it doesn't make you put on weight(cow!) - but as far as I'm concerned, if you're hungry then you eat! I've come off it now, and am really struggling to lose the weight - I think it's different for everyone though.

I cant answer why it does this to your appetite but yes it is well known for making you put on weight - the combined pill doesnt do this though (is this the one you carry on taking and no breaks in between I cant remember) well years ago after if effected my weight big time I changed to this one and I didnt put the weight on after this.

I put on a little bit of weight when I started taking it, moving from a size 10 to size 12. Not that thats particularly drastic. It didnt increase my appetite, I just seemed to put on a wee bit of weight.

I came off it, and have recently gone back on it, and havent experienced any side effects.

apparently not, its meant to be a myth, i read up on it at one point, if you are in a good relationship its meant to make you happy and eat more hence the reason you put on weight, whatever though cos i put on weight when i took it but made sure i went on a diet and it seemed to come off again thank god
