I have an Olde English Bulldog who is about 1 1/2 years old..When we first got him, he was sweet and loving, we told people he would never hurt a fly. Now, he is snapping at people, and you cannot go near him, or he turns into a monster. Could this be because he needs to be fixed or breed?

Thanks to all who answered! His shots are up to date...He lives in a very loving family, my mom considers him her furry son! No one would hurt him that I am aware of, I guess fixing him would be the first step and the continuing his obediance training.

He needs to be fixed - if he's this agressive how can you expect to breed him?

I have a ***** whose a Boxer mix and just a year old and we see at the park overly agressive males who have one thing in common - they are not fixed. Almost daily.

It's better to get him fixed as soon as possible and to enter him into training classes where the whole family can learn to deal with agression. You won't just be helping just your dog or yourself - but you'll be helping all bulldogs who get a bad rap because the few bad apples (I blame the owners not the dogs) out there.

Bulldogs have an assertive personality and at about 1 1/2 years he has now just come into his own and fully matured.
Yes he should be neutered but he also needs to be worked and in training and get used to the fact that people are in charge.
He should be worked in obedience and that will help the attitude.
They can be pushy dogs and need a firm hand and consistant disipline.

He needs Training....not Surgery or Sex
although humans may get grumpy when they don't get sex dogs do not.
Dogs at 1 1/2 years of age are more like 15 or 16 year old humans.
They begin to rebel when there is not enough structure in the home (Read that "Pack")
Being Pack animals, they need to know who is the pack leader.
Yelling at them will not help just as yelling at a teenage human will not help.
And please don't swat him on the nose, would you like your parents to disipline you like that?
Bulldogs are typically rebellious so you have your work cut out for you. Just be glad its not a Rottwieler who would have more weight to throw around.
Cesar Milan "The Dog Wisperer" has a great show on Mondays at 9pm on the National Geographic Channel. check your local listing for this show. You can also get mobil tips on your cell phone from him. (see URL below)
Also: Try investing in a good Dog Behaviour Book (at your local bookstore) i know they may be expensive but its worth the cost if you want to keep your dog happy. and prevent a future tragedy if "God forbid" he actually bites someone.

Step one: neuter
You can get a cheap neuter certficate at www.friendsofanimals.org to use at a local vet.

Step 2: Train using the Nothing In Life Is Free method.

Step 3: Do not let the dog on any furniture or through any doors first.

Good luck!

Does he get enough exercise? Does he know that you are the dominant one and not him? Sometimes we tend to baby our pets like they are children without giving the right things that dogs really need. If he thinks that he is the boss then he can become more aggressive as he thinks he is protecting he pack. Bull dogs were originally bred to be very aggressive as they were used in the old "sport" of bull-baiting. Breeding him will not help and having him fixed my calm him some but I don't think that this will totally solve your problem.

My dog has issues with other dogs. Thankfully never with humans. Anyways I had to get him fixed because he bit another dog. NOTHING CHANGED. That was just his personality. I just keep him away from other dogs. He was never mistreated. He' more spoiled than anything else.

In your case I would be very careful because if he does bite someone, your most likely to be sued. Try and find out if someone if abusing him when your not around. Most importantly make sure hes not spending too much time alone. Let him interact more with others. He may be pissed off if your neglecting him.

your dog needs to be fixed when a male goes into heat he will become aggressive. The one answer about rabies pay no attention too, if your dog had rabies he would of already died that disease kills within 24hrs. of contracting it and besides the only way to check for rabies is by cutting the head off and examining the brain. I have work as a vet assistant for a couple years.

Certainly neutering may help, you may want to have his vet examine him for other things that may be bothering him as well. If that all checks out okay, I would consult with a reputable Dog Trainer as those types of behavior are never good and could result in someone being seriously hurt. Good Luck.

Is this change in temperament sudden? If so, a sudden change in temperament most often has a physical cause. It sounds to me like his temperament has undergone a drastic change and neutering, while it's a good idea, won't help this dog. Let your vet know exactly what's been going on - I'd be leaning towards a physical cause.

it definitely sounds like having him neutered would help. it's usually recommended that dogs be neutered at around 6 months so that they are young enough that they heal quickly and they typically haven't learned any of the behaviors that one would hope to avoid (marking territory and aggression). also look into some of the others suggestions made like sickness or abuse.
