My hair is a dark chocolate brown. It has never been dyed or permed or anything and this is a huge step for me to change my hair. I was wondering what color would look good against such dark hair.

Depending on how soon you were going to get your highlights done. If soon, the seasons are changing and you should try and invite some fall colors in your hair. Think the color of leaves. That can help. There is nothing wrong with blond highlights against dark hair, you just have to determine the right level for you! Whatever salon you are going to, they will show you a swatch that will give you an idea of what color you would like. Keep in mind that most colors on these swatches are not exact because the color is applied to the lightest blond hair. so since your hair is dark the color wont be as bright and will be quite subtle. Also keep in mind your job, (you may not want to be too flashy) also you pigment, your undertones also and remember that change as seasons do.

Also there are many different highlighting techniques which can give you thin, thick, subtle to very noticeable finishes. So be very specific with the colorist during consultation as to where you want to see them, whether or not you part your hair and where can alse be a factor and if you are not happy with it, you can always get a corrective color job, just keep in mind that if you go light it is easier to tone it down then to lighten it if something is too dark!

And also hair care is very important when getting a chemical (even if not) since highlighting is opening your cuticle and and changing what is natural your hair will be shocked and it is up to you to keep it healthy which means protecting it form the environment and other appliances such as curling iron and blow dryers.
Don't believe it when people say how bad highlighting is (sometimes it can be a bad experience they may have had) and how damaging, (keep in mind that any and everything you do to your hair can be damaging, even the environment takes a toll on your hair) it all depends on how you take care of it once you leave the salon. Don't be afraind to ask lots of questions to your stylist, that's what they are there for

Happy Hair!

On dark brown hair, gold, bronze, mahogany, auburn and chestnut look nice. Stay away from light and dark blonde highlighting kits. There are some ones especially designed by Revlon but Frost'n'Glow is hard to do yourself. I suggest having a friend, boyfriend or relative do them for you so that they're accurate. You could start off with a half-box and do some of your hair but spread it evenly.

Some people like the thick diagonal highlights but you have to like an edgy look.

I'd recommend partial blonde highlights. But not extremely bright. A golden brown or even dark red would look nice. Whatever you choose make sure that they do NOT use any bleach. Ask if they're products contain bleach if they do, RUN. There are bleach-free alternatives that don't make your decision so permanent. If you don't like it you can change it, rather than wait for the bleached hair to grow out.

dark auburn, honey brown, a lighter brown than your natural color. Play with some color swatches and put them against your hair and see what you like and what looks good against it.

Don't go too light or you will look like a skunk. Some auburn hi-lights will look good.

since it's fall...aim for low-lights. don't go to being blond. if you go to a professional salon they can put in soft brown colors and caramels in your hair. pls don't do it yourself, as it'll be ruined.

It also needs to be in contrast to your skin colour. I reccomend purple/morone/red.
