The last words of Christ cannot possibly have been invented. How do you understand them? Does it say to you that this was a man? If Jesus was God how can it be said that he sacrificed anything?

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, 'Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, 'My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?'" - Matthew 27:45-46

I don't think any of your answers relly hit the mark. If you truly believe that Jesus IS god, how can he be forsaken by himself? I know that seems like a simplistic question, but don't play word games. Jesus IS god, co-equal in every way. How can god "ignore" him? I can see him saying "I'm really not looking forward to this!" or "Which one of us came up with this plan again?" But ""Why hast thou forsaken me?"

And all this stuff about god looking the other way, that looks like a great big serving of "interpretation" to me.

Les... you have asked a good question, but dont seem to be getting very understandable answers from a lot of people.

I agree with PICKLES... that is how i understand it too... Jesus was bearing sin and God had to look away.

I am British and not a "christian crusader". I think debate like this is a good thing, because unless you can understand the bible and its meaning, how do you know what to believe? It is no good just being preached to and being TOLD what to believe.

Keep asking the questions and make your own mind up on what you choose to believe.

First God cannot look upon sin, and Jesus took the sins of the world when he died on that cross, Second, Im not sure I could have looked either If it had been my Son on that cross, I think Jesus knew God had turned away, and wasen`t looking, Or maybe He was wondering why God had not let him die already, ANd he was just asking to be free from the fleshly body, that was in SO much pain.

Jesus the Son of God, gave up his life for man.

He was calling out to the only One who could save him.

What was exactly going through Jesus mind at this time, we don't know.

We do know that it wasn't a lack of faith, or doubting his Father, for Jehovah resurrected him.

Godly justice (tooth for tooth, soul for soul) could only be fulfilled if Jesus being equal to Adam gave up his life in sacrifice.

The idea that God died for man is unscriptural and impossible to accomplish (God can not die)

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) So Jesus was what he was at his death, as man on earth and as a spirit creature in heaven. The only begotten Son of God. God's Firstborn of all creatures.

We do know that it was a fulfillment of prophecy (Ps 22:1)

When this country came about, everyone was religious, but somehow most of the majority of the people don't believe in God. Man forgot all about God, so if there is a God, can you prove that he exists for non-believers. Some people think that God doesn't love them because of their family life. My family is so dysfunctional and the Bible said honor thy mother and father. If I honored them and believe every word they said, I would be nobody. My parents didn't want me to go to school (college) and they wanted me to work in some kind of retail estabishment (i am not a people person). So where else can I make a living. My parents were wrong about me.

Jesus was fully man and he knew he had to die as a man to be the sacrifice. God did abandon Jesus on the cross, and Jesus felt the full weight of the world's sins. He died and went to hell and preached his victory over death. He rose again, 3 days later.

Read all of Scripture, don't pick and choose. Jesus is the Son of God, the second member of the Triune God. Jesus said, I am and my Father are one. He had to be fully God and fully man to be able to be sacrificed for the sins of the world. He now stands as our Savior, telling the Father, "this one is mine" when we go to heaven for judgment. And I thank God he does!!!

BTW He said on the cross, Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabacthani (excuse spelling, please) Eloi being an endearing term like Daddy.

Though's words Jesus cried out was from a man to his father. Remember Jesus prayed to his Father in the garden before he was arrested, He said among other things in the prayer, "Remove this cup from me, not my will but yours," He was afraid that the maner of his death whould bring reproach upon his fathers name...nailed on a stake among other criminals.
Before he died God removed his holy spirit from him.
That's why he cried out to God, Son to his Father.
By the way he fullfilled prophecy doing this.
His sacrifie was approved when they could not find his body, God took it because that was the sacrifice that belonged to God. He was resurrected in glory he made sure before he returned to heaven, his close followers were encouraged. 500 witnesses saw him leave the earthy scene going up into the cloulds and then out of sight to heaven.

He was obviously more than a bit p.o'd - after all, look at all the preaching he had done to spread the word (reformed Judaism essentially) and maybe he had convinced himself he could not die like a mortal. Then, once they hammered the nails through his wrists, stuck him up there and left him hanging, he may have just begun to have had some doubts.

Here is my understanding...

By going on the cross, Christ chose to take on all of mankinds sins onto himself. As God is holy and pure he had to look away from his son at this point and could not look upon him.
Therefore, Jesus asked"Why has thou forsaken me?" because he thought God had abandoned him in his hour of need.
