Leaf Petiole

Petioles are the little stem thingies at the end of simple leaves. But compound leaflets don't have them. Not that it makes much sense unless you have a simple and a compound leaf up next to each other, but if you do, you can see the difference. Not every simple leaf has a petiole, mind you, and sometimes the petiole is wrapped around the stem. But compound leaflets *never* have petioles--the petiole, if there is one, is at the end of the entire leaf.

Sometimes, petioles have little mechanisms made of sensitive cells that cause the leaf to fold up (like in mimosa leaves--in the Fabaceae, or pea family.) These petioles are noticeably swollen at their bases. I guess their main function is to attach the leaf to the stem, and then maybe they also do something when the leaf changes color so that the chlorophyll doesn't go in the leaf anymore and only the other colors stay in the leaf. But I don't remember that part of my botany class.
