I second the Volvo 240 idea. that's the old school volvo. if we were about to be hit by an asteroid, I'd find one of those to get into. it's not built LIKE a tank, it IS a tank. it is only missing the gun turret and the funny little tracks

I'd say buy a VW. With all the crash test they have done with the VW's, it's the BEST car you can buy a teen. As you know, the first car is most likley the "Dummy" car. Teens are gonna try to do all kinds of things because they finally got a car. Speeding and accidents is not a good combination, but let's face it...they are gonna try to sped and if they are not as good a driver as they think they are, it's gonna be a bad accident! I'd say get the VW, so that when they bang it up, it wont seem that bad.

Oh yeah, and be sure to get really good auto insurance....the are gonna need it!

Seriously, you want something slow safe and dependable with a 4 cylinder engine and an automatic transmission.
Toyota Corolla would be my first pick.
What ever you do DO NOT let a teenager have a hot car. It's dangerous to them and us.
Teenagers are 9% of the driving population, and 30% of the fatalities.

A car with a censor in it that they need to blow in before the car will start.
Even the best child will succumb to a drink at a party if others are participating.
I know of a parent that lost their child due to the child's friend that had been drinking and chose to drive.
Please let your teenager know to call you for a ride if there is drinking involved and that they are doing the right thing by calling and will not be punished.

Something that can be beat the hell out of and it wont really matter because you didnt spend thousands on it. Yet you want it dependable enough. I had a used car that I payed for when I was 17. It lasted two years. Not very attractive but it got me where I needed to be and wasnt a big insurance issue.

Big car, small engine, heavy bumpers. When they wreck their first car, they will then most likely survive! Most teenagers have at least one, after which they get a whole bunch carefuler!

Honda Civic- lasts forever and has good resale value- cheap on gas as well. One caution, stay away from red 2 doors or modified civics because insurance rates are high due to the high occurence of them being stolen.

The Honda Civic is one of the most popular with teens. It's a good all-round car - reasonable cost, low insurance, low operating costs, good performance, good gas mileage, and looks good.

I had a 1977 Buick. It was a giant piece of ****, it only cost $750, and I loved it. Why? Because I didn't have to worry about it at all, which most 16 year old kids don't.
