Jeez louise!!! I cannot believe some of the answers you got!!!
You can definitely overcook them -- that's what causes green edges around the yolk.
Also, we should call them soft-cooked and hard-cooked, because eggs should never be boiled. Okay?
For hard-cooked eggs, here are two methods. Both methods assume you have let the eggs sit outside the fridge for an hour,
and that you then immerse the room temperature eggs into room temperature water. Also, do not use a larger pot than you need, i.e., for three eggs use a one quart saucepan, for a dozen eggs use a six quart pot. The water should be about a half inch above the eggs. If an egg floats, it's rotten. Toss it out before you begin. Place the pan, without a cover, on your burner and turn to high. If using an electric stove, use a burner the same size or slightly smaller than the bottom of the pan. If using a gas stove, if the flames lick up the side of the pan at all, the burner is set too high. (No matter what you are cooking, the gas flames should stay under your pot, never sneaking up along the sides.)
Okay.
Method 1: When the water is almost to the boil, turn it down to a shiver and put the lid on. (Shiver is a cooking term -- it's less than a simmer.) Cook for 15 minutes. Then put the pan under the cold water faucet and let the water run for awhile to cool the eggs as quickly as possible.
Method 2: When the water is almost to the boil, turn it OFF and put the lid on. Let it remain on the burner for 20 minutes. Then put the pan under the cold water faucet and let the water run for awhile to cool the eggs as quickly as possible.
Voila! Perfect hard-cooked eggs.

For consistent hard boiled eggs that do not have any black marks on the yolk (a tell tale sign of over cooking).... Start in cold water with a pinch of salt, bring to a boil on high heat. As soon as the water reaches a rolling boil, turn off the flame or burner and cover for EXACTLY 11 minutes. In the mean time prepare and ice bath with ice and water to shock the eggs in to stop the cooking process. Drain the hot water, give the pot a good shake to pre-crack the shells and immerse in the cold H2O. Let them soak in the ice water for about 7 minutes to ensure they are well chilled.

Usually you only need to boil them for ten minutes. That's when they are done. At that point I would remove the pan from the stove and put it directly in the sink, don't empty the water out! Turn on the cold water and let it run for about ten minutes. Then wait for a few minutes and do what ever you were gonna do with your eggs.

Assuming you want hard-boiled eggs: put the eggs in a pot and cover them with water. Put the pot on a stove and on high heat. As soon as the water comes to a boil, take the pot off the stove and let cool for 10-12 minutes. Drain and peel them under cold, running water. Comes out perfect every time.

The best way I've found is to put them in single layer in the pot. Put enough water in to cover eggs plus about 1/4 inch. Cook on high until water boils hard. Then remove from heat and cover for 15 minutes.

8 minutes after they begin to boil-then pour out the hot water and let them soak in cold for a minute for easy peeling-make me some egg salad by crushing the eggs with a fork and add about 1 teaspoon of mayonase per egg and salt and pepper. Also a dash of white vinegar and a couple teaspoons of sweet relish..

Fill the pot with tap water, put eggs in pot. Then turn burner on HIGH. When the water starts to boil, remove pot and cover with lid. Let the eggs sit for 15 minutes, then rinse in cold water.
