As a Christian I believe that I should try and spread the word of God. However, I can appreciate that many atheists don't want this at all. That is of course fair enough. But, you must realise that in fact we want the best for you and love you. Is that such a bad thing? Just letting you know why we might want to try and convert you ok.
Right, so then why is it that many atheists have to be horrible to Christians? Please understand that I do not mean all atheists! You may think I am stupid, but I am not that stupid to assume that. To insult and say that we are stupid, that our beliefs are invalid etc... what is that going to achieve?
And what is more, why do you have to take the piss out of our religion? To insult Jesus etc. I just don't understand why someone would have to do that?
Please explain, and also please understand that if this does not apply to you, then I don't want to offend you, but reply anyway!
Cheers.

Sorry tommy, appears I didn't make it clear that I think it is wrong to try and convert people. Sorry about that.
By the way, why do you not have your email available? What is the point of answering if I can't even reply, considering you won't even check back to this question!

Ok, blackacre, I see where your coming from, but you must understand I am not talking about you telling me to **** off or whatever, I'm talking about people saying absolutely disgusting things about my faith, saying that all christians should be fed to lions and stuff like that. That is wrong agreed?

Same reason why many Christians are horrible to Atheists. Not to be facetious, but many Atheists resent having someone continually tell them that an imaginary being is going to come down on them; having 20 or so people sing "Kumbaya" outside your house doesn't really make it any better.
I understand you feel you are spreading something good. All I ask is you think of how you would feel if everywhere you went, there were people telling you about Sandstrom, the purple cow who farted Universes, and who would eat you if you didn't believe in his divine love.
Eventually, you'd begin telling them to **** off.
Which Christians are horrible to Atheists? You couldn't have spent much time in this Q&A section... or answered your door for "Witnesses"... or had fired-up fundies in the workplace...
With regards to your last addendum: I couldn't agree more. I don't think that anyone should attack the person: open season on ideas, but certainly no one should simply suggest throwing all Christians to the lions any more than nuking Muslims or gassing Jews. All ideas and opinions are open to criticizm, but people are still people and there are enough people committing atrocioties against those of every faith without egging on by anonomyous posters.

I don't dislike all Christians (I am Wiccan not Athiest) but there are alot of really obnoxious ones who try to cram their beliefs down people's throats. Although your faith teaches you to go out and convert people the fact is that your religion is NOT the only right one and people have free will to choose NOT to believe the way you do and you don't have the right to continue to harrass them just because you think you know what is best for them.
To come to a person ONCE and testify is right and it is your right as a Christian to do so. It is NOT your right to harass, to insult those who refuse to be converted. You do not have the right to shove pamphelts in their face or rip the pentegrams off their necks (I have had this happen). Christians do not have the market cornered on charity or being good people, good parents or spirituality in general, no matter what they THINK that Jesus taught.
As someone who is not Christian and has been the target of many conversion attempts, the problem non christians have with christians is not the dogma, is not Jesus Christ, it is the obnoxious, single minded, complete disrespect for the beliefs of others that cause them to act in a hostile manner.
If you cannot see this and can't understand it then you are doomed to continue to be treated poorly by the people that you so want to convert.

The same question could be asked of you if you just put Atheists and Christian in the reverse order. I have seen so many so called Christians really attack the Atheists and tell them they are going to hell no matter what they do as human beings, even if those people are good, honest loving people. Makes no difference, if they aren't Christian then they are so doomed. Is it any wonder that some of the Atheist strike back with as much hatred as some of the Christians do? It is really no surprise. On this site I have learned that the Atheists think they are right and the Christians think they are right and no body is changing their views so is will be nasty and hateful to some extent and you can take that to the bank.

I have already made up my own mind about the existence of a God. I was raised a Christian (Catholic) and I could never understand how this God that loves us so much stands back and gives us this wonderful free will to create havoc in the world. If your child was running wild outside burning down the neighbourhood, would you not stop him? I need proof and so far, nothing has convinced me that there is a God. In fact, I am convinced there is no God by the proof I see everyday. Religions clashing with each other on a scale large enough to mean our final destruction. Everyone thought Communism would destroy the world. Looks like Religion is going to....thus: please don't try to convert me. I don't want anything to do with this destructive need for humans to believe and 'force' others to believe.

As an atheist, I believe that I should try and spread the Fallacy of god. However, I can understand that many Xians don't want this at all. That is of course fair enough. But, you must realise that in fact we want you to be able to think for yourself. Is that such a bad thing? Just letting you know why we might want to try and enlighten you, ok?

I'm Agnostic, but this applies to me also.
I think it's very condescending when a Christians says he wants to tell me about Jesus because he loves me, and doesn't want to see me to go to Hell.
What you have to understand is that's your version of the truth. And although it works for you, it's not MY version of the truth. Even though you intentions are noble, to try and almost forcibly convert another person is in a way spitting on their beliefs.
And like Blackacre said, would you be as tolerant of, let's say, a Jew coming to your house and trying to convert you? A Hindu? A Muslim? Most would not.

As a Christian myself, I find that you really have to look at both sides when witnessing to people. You wouldn't want someone to go on and on trying to convert you to thier religion so you have to respect what they have chosen for themselves. It is okay to debate your opinions with each other, but just be mindful that if you keep on telling them that what they think is wrong they will be turned off by christianity before you even finish explaining your beliefs. Study and be ready for any questions that they might have for you. The Evidence Bible is a good source to have for most questions that I have been faced with.

Have you considered that your attempts to "convert" are insulting and an imposition upon us? Have you ever considered that some of us might consider such behavior "horrible?" Such an attempt at converting us implies that we are stupid and that our beliefs are invalid, so why is it a problem that we respond in kind? Can't take it? Is that it? Insecure over the fact that maybe, just maybe, because not everybody kowtows to your spiritual line that maybe, just maybe, you and your ilk have it wrong? Hmmm?

But most atheists were christian and they know Christianity, you well be just repeating what they know. I suggest that you may try to be an atheist for a week or a month and you may answer your own questions then and I think God well forgive you for being an atheist for Short period for research reason. You can tell him hey God please allow me to be an atheist for some times to do some research on your religion and after i finish I promise to go back to you religion unless proved wrong. amen
