One of my sons was in a special ed classroom for behavioral problems. He was abused before we adopted him and had violent outbursts. When a child was being very bad they would go to a time out area. This was a separate section within the classroom where the child could not be seen. I suppose some might call it a closet, but it did not have a door.
In general, NO, a child should not be put in a closet for punishment. However, if the child needs to be restrained or placed away from others for the personal safety of himself and the others... we are talking about a much different situation.

I believe the school needs your permission to use a"time-out" room, which may the size of a closet. I do not think it could help the student in the closet or the other students listening to the child trying to get out!

If someone put my child in a closet at school, I would be at the school board faster than a rabbit can multiply. That is not proper anywhere.

No it is improper punishment anywhere. I would have some serious issues with my childs school if he/she came home and told me that.
