WHAT? Dude, I don't know what they are not teaching in school anymore, but you need a good history education. I'm not sure if there are five set things, and anybook who says there are only five is probably leaving out a lot, but heres a list to get you started.

1. the personal computer.
2. the cell phone
3. super mario (video games in general for that matter)
4. rap music
5. cable TV
6. VHS/DVD. And for that matter, video rental outlets
7. casette/CSs.
8. for that matter... The internet! Amazing that you can't live without one anymore.
9. Equal opportunity in the workplace
10. AIDS. That made a huge dent in the 80s and 90s.
11. Freedom in the former Soveit Union/No cold war!
12. Advances in medical care/outrageously expenisve health care.
13. Health insurance/Managed care.
14. Terrorism involving arabs. They had it involving soviets.
15. Cultural diversity

Hope the helps.

personal computers (they filled up whole rooms back then. This also means no e-mail, chatting, blogs, mp-3, or the Internet)
cell phones (we had something quaint called a party line...meant we shared the line with 3 other family's. Private lines were expensive)
CD player (we had record players and our vinyl came in 33rpm and 45 rpm)
colored television (also only for the wealthy)
mostly we listened to AM radio. FM came along during my last yr in HS.
Most family's only had one car. We rode the bus to school, or walked if we lived close enough. If you did have your own car (which you bought yourself) you had to apply for a parking permit to use the school parking lot).
Microwave ovens
hot air popcorn poppers
VCR's or DVD's
remote control
ice makers or water in the frig door
garbage disposers
Gatorade
