It depends.A perm just means Permanent. It can mean either a permanent wave (making naturally straight hair curly) or a perm (relaxer) which can make curly hair straight. Perm just means which ever chemical you choose to use you need to make sure that is what you want b/c the only way to get rid of it is to grow it out or cut it!
A permanent wave's main chemical is Ammonium Thioglycolate which change the (straight) hair's bonds from being straight to curly and to determine the curl depends on the lenght and width of the (curling) rods used. the procedure consists of three steps
Rodding, processing time, and neutralizing
Rodding takes care of the physical action of the hair
Processing takes care of the chemical action of the hair
The chemical action of the the waving lotion breaks the (disulfide) bonds and softens your hair, from there it can mold the shape of the rod around which it is wound.
Neutralizing is also a chemical action which basically just freezes the bonds into the shape of the rod and give you your curl!
Now don't get me wrong there is definitely more to it, but you will need to see a professional stylist that can determine the density, texture, porosity, elasticity, hair type and lenght of your hair. also perm (product) selection.
Now a relaxer consists of the main ingredient Sodium hydroxide.
which turns naturally curly hair straight and again should be thouroughly decided before doing because you will have to either cut or grow out your hair for it's natural curl pattern to return.
This process consists of Processing, Neutralizing, and conditioning.
Before performing procedure hair and scalp should again be examined by a professional hair care provider. For virgin hair the relaxer has to be applied from root to end (not in that order), but if someone has had a relaxer before they should only need to have the roots done.
The first step is the Relaxer. (the product) is applied to hair until the chemical enters the cortex of the hair strand a "relaxes" it from curly to straight. (This should be timed accordingly as well as a permanent wave) while the product is on the hair it should be combed from roots to end without tearing throught the hair in order to give the hair it's new shape and without aggravating the scalp (BECAUSE IT WILL BURN!)
The next step is to neutralize, which happens at the sink, the relaxer is rinsed (thouroughly) from the hair and a Neutralizing shampoo is used to completely clean relaxed from hair and scalp. A second shampoo ( using the neutralizing shampoo) is necessary to bring the PH down to a safe level.
The third step is to condition the hair to offset he harshness of the sodium hydroxide in the relaxer and to help restore some or the natural oils to the scalp and hair.
Next step is to style. (I recommed roller sets because it is the healthiest for the hair, since it has been through so much after the chemical) I do not recommend blow drying especially day of the chemical because it is drying to the hair and we all know dry hair is damaged hair. In some instances it may be okay like maybe if your new growth is hard to manage. But please go to a professional.
Depending on hair type, the relaxed look can last for 6 weeks or until new growth arrives.
I hope this helps. I am a licensed cosmetologist and do practice hair care.
Please do not attempt perming your hair at home, it can be dangerous if you do not know what you are doing.
Keep in mind, that "ANYTHING" you do to your hair is damaging (blow drying, curling, chemicals, the sun, hard water etc.) But it all depends on how well you take care of it that matters! And even if something does go wrong with your hair, just remember as longas you are ALIVE and WELL your hair will continue to grow!

ok. First you hair is wrapped around perming rods or rollers. A solution of ammonium thioglycolate is then applied to your hair. It breaks down the hydrogen and sulfer bonds in the hair and the hair takes the shape of the rod. It is rinsed off when the shape is there. Then a neutralizer is applied, it has oxygen in it and will harden those bonds in the curl position. If the hair is rinsed properly, there will not be a smell.

Short for permanent wave. A hair dresser rolls your hair on little rods then puts some really stinky chemicals on your hair and you sit under a dryer for about an hour. Rinse and the curls stay in your hair for about three months , along with the really bad smell. The bad smell ususally last only about a week. Except your not supposed to wash your hair for 3 days and that doesn't help the smell issue.

For women of color a perm is also known as a relaxer and it gives us straight hair or rekaxes the curl pattern.
For others a perm makes their hair curly.
I buy relaxer kits from a beauty supply store and apply it myself. I roll up my hair nightly and I wear my hair in sprial curls durning the weekdays and I wear it straight on the weekends.

A perm is where you get you hair done so it is crimpy/curly for a while (depending on how much money you are willing to spend) For an example:

Its where they put chemicals in your hair that curl it up and it smells really bad(strong). I remember one time i helped my friend perm her mom's hair. I will never again.
I was bad. And I was dying from the stench!!!!
