The main difference between Hinduism and Buddhism is the idea of God, as with all religions. Buddhism has its origins in Hinduism. The Hindus believe in one God that manifests itself in many different smaller gods. The Buddhists believe that in order to find true peace and divinity, one must look within because God is within. Therefore, in Buddhism, there's more attention placed on meditation, and centering one's self, finding purity. It's quite minimalist in it's approach, it believes in removing all materialism in the pursuit of purity. Hinduism is much more elaborate, and believes in rituals that bring one closer to a particular patron divinity which in turn brings them closer to God.
As an outsider, I've found it easier to assimulate Buddhist value systems into my life (i.e. meditation, simplicity, the idea of looking for the power within). Hinduism seems very confusing to me.. lots of bells and whistles and elephants-- a little too many for my tastes. I've never been able to have someone fully explain the basics of Hindu beliefs to me, whereas Buddhist beliefs have definitely been outlined in ways I can clearly identify with. It appears there's just a lot more clarity of vision in Buddhism. I hope this helps!

Buddhism and Jainism are two major offshoots of Hinduism. Hinduism has many gods. The main ones are the Trimurti: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Siva the destroyer. Guatama was a prince who founded Buddhism. He spoke of the fool who is shot with a poison arrow and wonders about who shot the arrow and who made it, rather than treating his wound. He said debating about the existence and nature of gods was idle speculation. One should spend his time more productively in ending suffering in this life. In other words, Hinduism is polytheistic, while Buddha was an agnostic. Buddha means enlightened one. Guatama had this title. His doctrine is the Eightfold Path.

Hinduism is a religion that has a mult layered myriad of god and goddesses. Buddhaism is not so much a religion, as a way of thought and life. The many Buddha statues you see are attempts to represent the serene face of the Buddha not something to be worshipped. Buddha is to be revered in all people not as an entity itself. He was a man, no more, no less

I googled up a few sites, but wasn't happy with the descriptions of Buddhism on most of them.
I don't know all that much about Hinduism, only had one course covering it. My Buddhism professor described the differences in terms of their relations to karma. If I'm remembering this right, she said that Hinduism believed strongly in karma, that one's actions in this life will affect one's status in the next incarnation. Buddhism was a reaction to that -- it also has the concept of karma, but seeks to step out of that cycle by realising the emptiness of it, that karma is an illusion.

After being raised christian and being held captive of their religeous college, Hinduism can be a breath of unpolluted air. the important diffrence between both is christians remember on a unmarried god and hindu's remember on arround 3000. exciting aspect is christians reject all gods yet their personal yet in hinduism all gods are commonplace and revered. So Hindu's are more advantageous inclusive and Christians are unique, there is your diffrence. Jesus is in reality, to hindu's an incantation of vishnu.
