The Toyota Matrix is a bigger and more powerful car than the Scion xA.
The Toyota Matrix comes standard with a 130 HP engine or you can by the top of the line model with a 160HP engine. I believe you can also add a super charger to this vehicle.
The car is bigger and has a sister car the Pontiac Vibe.
The Toyota Matrix is built on the same platform as the Toyota Corolla.
The Scion xA is a smaller vehicle with only 110 HP. It can be modified and Scion were designed with modifications in mind. So you can modify a Scion more easily because they are more readily available.
The gas mileage on the two is comparable, with the xA getting slightly better gas mileage, but I'd go with the Toyota Matrix over the Scion xA.

Matrix is a bigger car, XA was the old Yaris in Europe (Very expensive there by the way).
Matrix is a serious car, XA is a car for kids to put a lot of cheap plastic in it.
Matrix is made by Toyota in Canada and its twin Pontiac Vibe is made by Toyota in the USA.
I will go for Vibe, at least is the same car and doesn't look the same as zillions of cars out there. And it can have six speeds manual!

The "main" difference? the motor, the tranny, the body, the frame,.....Everything.
They both have timing chains to correct the above answerer.
The xA is about 13-14k, the Matrix is about 19-21k. The 180hp XRS is not available for 2007. The Matrix is a lot bigger and generally a nicer car.

I believe Scion has a timing belt, and the Matrix has a Chain. Timing belts cost alot to change.
