It is interesting.... The US is fighting a so called war in Iraq and we are leading a war in Afghanistan, which was sparked by an act of war on the US. I think most people, not blinded by US rhetoric, know the Iraqi war is unfounded and accomplishing nothing. US policy makers just don't get it (and never will), you cannot impose a democracy in a region that doesn't want it (just look at the Israeli / Lebanon war).
I Agree with you.... Canada's role has always been the peace keeper and should remain so. PM Harper has changed our role, at the accumulating expense of Canadian soldiers' lives.

Canada is a member nation of NATO. The NATO treaty to which it is a signatory, has Article 5, which states that all nations who are part of the Organization will assist a member nation that has been attacked.
Since the 9/11 attacks were orchestrated with the tacit approval of the Afghani government at the time, Canada is merely fulfilling its obligation under the treaty.

We aren't copying American foreign policy. We have our own, and that is to help those who ask us for help. That some fools think handing out candy to children, or blankets to widows is an act of war is a sign of a sick group of people. What you should be asking is why Canadian troops are getting killed by our supposed American alies?

We were being diplomats of peace... why do you think those soldiers were handing out things to children, rather than roaming the street in tanks?
We're Canadians, we "defend"... we defend ourselves and we defend those we feel are being wronged (that's what I like to think at least)... we stand up for the underdogs (So why are we not in Darfur?).
I'm torn on this one... "peace keeping" it isn't (need peace to keep peace), but I do hope 'peace making' is what is in our soldiers hearts... misled, misguided or not.

They're fighting with allies. Canada helps other countries when they're in conflicts; then when Canada themself gets into a conflict, the other countries return the favor and help them out. A "you scratch my back, I scratch your back" deal.

Consider it payback for the billions of dollars the US spends on defense that Canada takes advantage of.
Oh, and there's that whole NATO obligation thing too.

Well, they volunteered to go when, and where called you twit. That makes it their cause, and THEIR WAR. It's not only Canadians, and Americans in Afghanistan either. You should be glad that you've got brave people protecting your butt, because you sure as heck wouldn't fight for nothing.
