Think of a cute name. Make a long list of names and study them until you decide on one that is just right. Buy toys that the puppy will enjoy playing with
and a bed he or she can sleep on, also his food and water bowls, do you have some picked out, maybe print his or her name on the bowls. I'm real happy for you and the puppy and hope you have many many years together.

One thing that you can do is start getting ready for the puppy, you can get the feed bowls, water bowls, and that sort of stuff now. Also read as much as you can on puppies and learn all that you can about how to care for them. You need to learn about shots, potty training, how much excersise it will need, how big it will get, and stuff like that. The time will go by fast if you start reading and learning all this now.. good luck and congratulations

While you are waiting read books on proper puppy/dog care, save money to get supplies you will need such as dishes, collar, leash, toys. Locate obedience trainers in your area and go watch them. That way you wil lknow which ones you like and/or can afford so when your pup comes you can get him/her signed up for classes, go volunteer at the shelter, study the breed you will be getting, learn all you can.

If you haven't decided on what dog to get you could spend time until then researching the characteristics of the different breeds and decide which one best fits your lifestyle. You can go to pet shops and dog pounds and visit with the pets and the people who work there. They will be able to give you some first hand information.

Get a bunch of books and read up on dog training and care.
Get yourself a puppy baby book and start in on that,
come up with neat names.
I knitted sweaters while I waited for each pup to come home,
pups love their own snuggely.
you can also get patterns and make puppy toys.
I hope that will help.
Have fun with you new pup!
