Heat brings on symptoms of MS, but does it actually contribute to the progression of the disease?

I have MS. Heat makes it harder for me to function, bringing on the symptoms or making them worse. But, there is no hard evidence that it affects progression. My understanding is that MS damages the myelin sheath around the nerves in the central nervous system. It can repair itself to a certain extent but not perfectly. The damaged nerves do not work as well as normal nerves and increased body temperature leads to their further dysfunction. but as soon as I cool off, I feel better.

Heat stresses the body and stress aggravates multiple schlerosis by depressing the immune system. See Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine for a good discussion on MS and how naturopaths approach the treatment of this sorry disease. Also, read the section on Colamine in Dr Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution for a very interesting option in arresting the progress of the disease.
Good luck!
