My desired location is above the fireplace, and the studs seem to be pretty far apart. Plus, spending $250 on a mount that is just some peices of metal seems like a ripoff

Take a good look at the area between the mantel and the ceiling; do you see any soot? That's an indication of fire damage.

How do you plan to hold your monitor "captive"? You drop it, you bought it.

Is it eye level or do your chairs have headrests?

Yes, they are just pieces of metal, but they figure you pay many thousands for a TV, $200-$300 more is nothing. If you are handy with the hack saw and drill you could make your own, paint them up nice and mount them to the studs with several long screws. It just depends on how much you want to save.

only if you dont mind your TV falling off the wall. You can buy static mounts for lcd or plasmas for about $50 but they do not tilt or swivel. I wouldnt risk your nice flat screen being damaged by not spending and extra few dollars to mount it.
