Yes it is mean. The more humane way to keep a dog quiet is with a muzzle.

These collars are not to punish or make the dog stop barking simply because it annoys the owner or people in nearby apartments.

Shock collars are meant to correct in certain situations, and only if all else fails. I have a friend who wanted to take their nutso dog camping with them, and she felt it was the only way they could teach her not to bark at every noise. They used it only long enough to train her to hush when they said hush. They're happy, and the dog is happy because it gets to go with them. No harm done.

Unfortunately, this is one of the very few happy instances I can relate.

Personally, I have heard too many horror stories because owners do not read or follow directions. Many immature people use them as a quick punishment solution because they are too lazy to work with their animal. One college student bought one because her poor dog barked to get out of its crate in the mornings to pee, and she was too lazy to get up and let it out. It was easier for her to lay there and zap the dog to make him be quiet. We now have that dog at our shelter, and it is an emotional mess.

At our rescue shelter, we also once had a dog who stopped barking, but made the most god-awful high pitched noise as a result of improper use of a collar. The collars will also cause sores on the animal's neck if you don't remove it after training. I personally have never used one on an animal and don't believe it's necessary. There are too many places that offer training of a different kind.

Please consider taking the dog to a training class. You can probably conquer the problem with a few treats and the proper tone of voice. Good luck to you.

shock collars are verycruel if not used properly, I recommend a no bark collar it gives a high pitch sound everytime the dog barks. I used one on one of my dogs that had a barking problem. He barked at the wind now he very seldom barks. Don't muzzle a dog unless they are trying to bite someone this will not stop htem from barking. good luck

there are two different types of shock collar. yes there is one that shocks when the dog barks and there is another that is a training collar that shocks when you press a button. A muzzle will NOT stop a dog from barking.

I had a barker too the school called the cops and the cops told me to get a shock collar or get rid of the dog.It worked might be because he is a big dog.Didn't seem to cause him too much pain I think it annoyed him more then hurt him.
If you have more time you can call a dog trainer to help you if you do not want to use a collar.

There are other ways to keep a dog from barking. My dog used to bark a lot. I would tell her "no bark" or "quiet". When she stopped, even if just for a second, I would give her a treat. Now she only barks when someone is at the door.

A shock collar isn't mean because you can set it on a very low dose. Some shock collars even come with the option of this beeping noise that dogs don't like.

Yes just a little, the dog will never know when to bark then and it won't understand why you're buzzing it!
Try to associate excess barking with something bad, it would probably be a more humane way of teaching it... and if you're affectionate to it enough then it'll understand :)

Like every tool ... it works if used correctly ... which means that the human must be smarter and more patient and more consistent than the dog.

Many of the modern dog trainers are using methods that do not involve any negatives ... no hitting ... no shouting ... no shocking.

They get success with positive responses to good behavior. At issue is consistency and time. And realizing that your dog just like us will make mistakes and loose their concentration at times.
You must be able to keep yourself under control and encourage positive actions.

Good luck! It does work if you want it bad enough.
