What is the name of those people that fix it for free and contact your insurance company?

Glass repair for windshields is not free and if it is more than two inches, the whole windshield needs to be replaced. If the chip is an inch or so it can be repaired by the same people that replace the windshield for about $25 to $50 US. You can try and sue the transportation department of your state for the damages, but most people do not and don't report it to the insurance either (Not that they would do anything about it anyway).

Almost any auto glass repair company will do this, since they know it is covered, and they have a suction cup assembly that fixes to the outside glass and injects a substance tht fills the spot easily.
They are happy to do it - they get paid, and your insurance pays them. This procedure can sometimes stop the spot from travelling and growing across the glass. If the spot is NOT in the drivers vision, and does not grow, you can sometimes ignore it - it usually only matters if one of the tiny cracks around the spot starts to grow or if you are selling the vehicle and need a safety.
If the spot is small, not in the driver's vision, and you are not selling, then you could just ignore it- you may need your insurance for something serious, and bothering them with claims usually increases your premiums +/or increases the likelyhood that future negotiations with your company will show a history of " accidents " - increasing your problems with getting reasonable coverage... your choice.

if you call your insurance company they can refer you to a glass shop that can repair it (provided it is in the right place and the right size to repair). Some insurance companies waive your deductible if it's repairable, so they would pay the $25-50 it costs to repair, if you have comprehensive coverage.

Most glass shops can do it. Safelite is the larger company out there, and I know that they offer repair if it qualifies.

Most auto glass dealers will do windshield repairs. If you have collision and comprehensive coverage, your insurance company will pay for the repairs and waive the deductible. Try Safe Lite auto glass.

The cost of fixing/replacing the windshield would probably be less than your deductible; I'd just get it fixed without reporting it to avoid your insurance premium going up.

You should always contact your ins company first. That way if you go thru them and something goes wrong at least you used their approved repair shop. Many companies use Safelite. It can be repaired if it's a crack less than 6" or a chip or star.

Binswanger or Safelite. Call your insurance company, if you have comprehensive coverage, the charge will be waived. If you don't have full coverage, you have to pay for it yourself.
